4- STEPS to Achieve Top Level Performance in Sports & Life– How to Achieve IN THE ZONE in Our Performance on the Field of Sports & Life
I first would like to stress the importance of getting our kids into sports for a multitude of reasons that helps them develop not only in their formative years, but well into adulthood. There are mental and physical health and skills that are beneficial to their childhood developmental years. These childhood developmental years are when kids are developing skills to put in their toolbox, or developing their fine motor skills.
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for kids to accomplish this critical task in their entire life. These are the very critical motor skills and thinking skills that they will rely on for the rest of their lives. Your children must develop these before the age of 12 at the latest. Doctors of all backgrounds and disciplines believe that what benefits the heart also benefits the mind and soul.
If you want your kids to excel in life they must be able to develop two important learning skills- Autodidact and Apperception.
Autodidact– Is the ability to learn and develop oneself. Because you can’t rely on others to teach you what you will need. Your kids must develop a ferocious reading and comprehension habit to achieve their objectives in life.
Apperception– Is the ability to take skills developed in one sport and apply them to another sport to be able to make maximum use of your God given talents. I interviewed Coach Bobby Hall, a very successful retired high school Football Coach here at Madison Central. He told his staff that if he ever hear one of them telling an athlete at the high school to specialize in one sport he would fire them on the spot. The High School Athletics Association encourages students to play multiple sports.
How to Perform IN THE ZONE During Critical Times
- Develop Natural and Repetitive Routine tasks.
- Practice and perform under actual conditions that must exist in both.
- Rely on a high degree of: relaxation, confidence, and muscle memory.
- Focus, to allow the Subconscious mind to take over and Dominate the conscious mind, or being IN THE ZONE.
Breaking Down the 4- IN THE ZONE Steps
Develop Natural and Repetitive Routine tasks–
If your performance on the field, court, and/or course isn’t instinctive, intuitive, and repetitive to you where you don’t even have to think about your performance, guess what- you are not going to perform what you worked long hours practicing. Golfers experience this trying to take their swing thoughts from the practice range to performance on the golf course. You are using the very skills you developed as kids.
Practice and perform under actual conditions that must exist in both–
In football we had scrimmage practice where we, the offense, went up against our defense in executing plays. These were so fierce that we looked forward to game day. There is one key element missing usually when we practice, and that is adrenaline. Adrenaline kicks in your subconscious mind and bypasses your thinking process. When practicing, develop drills and videotape your drills.
Below, I was asked to do a three part golf training video for WJTV-12 Sports ZONE show leading up to the 2021 US OPEN. You’ll see in these videos me using a throw down rubber Home Plate and a chipping mate at a football practice field using a special practice ball, called AlmostGOLF Balls, that travel only one-third the distance of an actual golf ball up to 100- yards. This made the Germantown Football practice field perfect setup:
THE Orange Bucket Challenge Link INTRO
The Orange Bucket Challenge Walk-Through
The Orange Bucket Challenge Demo
The Promo that WJTV-12 Sports ZONE made for me for doing the Three part golf video:
The other reason that I used the AlmostGOLF Balls was the film crew wanted to use just one camera set up where they could show it was actual golf shots that I was making without editing the video. If I was hitting actual drives, they would be 295- yards.
Rely on a high degree of: relaxation, confidence, and muscle memory–
You have to have a quiet and peaceful mind and trust your training and motor skills, muscle memory, to be able to perform IN THE ZONE. In the videos that I made for the local sports show, you see me use a Home Plate and visualize that I’m in my batter’s box. What that does is kick in my confidence that I have standing in the batter’s box standing on the tee box.
The only thing I’m doing in these videos is focusing on my target, the Orange Bucket, and the golf ball. That is it, I let my instincts training kick in naturally.
I like to share with my students a passage from Isaiah 30:15 In quietness and confidence shall be your strength. So why think and worry about something you’ve done since childhood?
Focus, to allow the Subconscious mind to take over and Dominate the conscious mind, or being IN THE ZONE–
There is a huge difference between thinking, diffuse, and being focused, you diffidently want the later, of being focused.
Focusing- Uses the familiar processes and activates your muscle memory by following well-defined tasks, the athlete is focused on details, and sequences.
Thinking- Uses new concepts (Problem No. 1), Trying to figure out what task to use (Problem No. 2), Not concerning anything particular (Problem No. 3).
If you drove a vehicle for any length of time you experienced IN THE ZONE performance before, you just weren’t aware of it at the time. You are driving along a familiar scenic highway under normal conditions. As you get into your trip you don’t remember driving along certain stretches of the highway or past certain landmarks, but you were able to navigate the road and traffic safely. You arrive at your destination safely.
This is what occurred without you being aware of it, the conditions were normal and didn’t need any special attention or thinking process. The scenic highway was relaxing where your subconscious mind was able to take over the majority of all driving tasks using well-developed driving skills. You were able to focus on something else than driving.
While what is called Driving Hypnosis is unsafe to drive a vehicle down a highway it works great in sports. Like driving a golf ball down the fairway and onto the green.
There was a performance coach in Texas that I talked with that didn’t like the term Hypnosis, but Driving Hypnosis is exactly what you want to occur in your performance for a short period of time, like in the batter’s box, or on the tee box for example. Driving Hypnosis perfectly demonstrates the 4- IN THE ZONE performance skills.
Just remember that 80 percent of all our task we performed everyday is performed by our subconscious mind, and not a thinking process. If it was a thinking process of what we perform each and everyday, we would be totally exhausted.
