Golfer’s Axes of Control for Power & Consistency Part 2– Preset, Lock, Load, Muscle Memory to Drop, Rollout Strike Zone Golf Swing Sequence
To exercise more control in your golf game, relate the golf clubface to your hands like a baseball batter does standing in the batter’s box, holding the bat. This will allow the golfer to develop significantly more Power and Consistency in their golf game. This allows the golfer to develop a naturally repetitive routine and be relaxed that are keys to confidence on the golf course.
Avoid Swing Thoughts, Use Images and Instincts
To avoid swing thoughts in my golf game that are distracting and interfere with my natural instincts, I override thinking by creating muscle memory and mental images. I use the mental image using 2- muscles memory and a bone in my forearm. These mental images create the feeling that is critical in my golf game that allows me to hardwire directly into my subconscious mind. Below, I have labeled the left and right forearms and wrists that I use to create the mental image in my golf swing.
Our subconscious that relies on instincts is important to our golf game as these are what we will naturally fallback on and rely on under course conditions. Your instincts will kick in as a natural response overriding any conscious swing thought or thought processes that we might have developed in our practice sessions. Instincts are habit based that cause us to become proficient at routine tasks.
A great example of an instinct task is driving a vehicle or riding a motorcycle or bike. Most of our tasks are instinctive, habit based, because we have to respond quickly and thinking is too cumbersome. Most of us enjoy leisure drive mainly because it is instinctive and natural without having to think.
So if you want to improve and become consistent in your golf game you will have to develop fours condition during practice and performance on the golf course:
1. Develop Natural and Repetitive Routine tasks.
2. Practice and perform under actual conditions that must exist in both.
3. Rely on a high degree of: relaxation, confidence, and muscle memory.
4. Allow the Subconscious mind to takeover and Dominate the conscious mind, or being IN THE ZONE.
A Fact of Golf
I can guarantee the golfer of any level this one thing– You might very well practice your golf swing for hours and weeks going through your swing thoughts in the backyard or on the practice range with the conscious mind. But, once you step foot onto the golf course, your subconscious mind will take over your golf swing sequence and disregard and override your conscious mind, where your swing thoughts are located. Your golf swing has to be instinctive to be able to perform your swing on the golf course.
This is the main reason that golfers find it difficult for them to take their golf game and swing from the backyard or the practice range and onto the golf course. The golfer on the golf course is relying solely on instincts instead of swing thoughts. The golfer has to focus on developing instincts from skills that they developed in early childhood development, before the age of 12.
So the entire responsibility of the golfer during their practice sessions is just convincing their subconscious mind to use certain existing motor skills to execute their golf swing sequence.
Golfer’s Left and Right Sides
For the right-handed golfer- The left side is for Power while their right side is for Acceleration and Speed. For the left-handed golfer this is simply reversed.
The Critical Muscle Memory for Preset-Lock-Load
There are two critical and simple wrist maneuvers to Preset-Cock-Lock-Load their wrists that actually mimic the entire golf swing. This Preset-Cock-Lock-Load is performed with two forearm muscles/tendons.
If done correctly these two muscles/tendons establish 80 percent of the critical components of the golf swing. Let me give you some words of encouragement, we have done these since childhood, especially if we played baseball.
Below, I made a 3-part series golf training videos for a local Sports Shown, Sports ZONE on WJTV-12 that aired in June of 2021 leading up to the US OPEN. These videos covered my GOLFER’S BRACHS-PALMER Technique:
Orange Bucket Challenge
THE Orange Bucket Challenge Link INTRO
The Orange Bucket Challenge Walk-Through
The Orange Bucket Challenge Demo
WJTV-12 made an AD from the 3- Video Series Above
I did a 3- Part Video for WJTV-12 SPORTS ZONE Show leading up to the 2021 US Open where I cover my golf training technique of taking my golf swing from the Batter’s Box to the Tee Box to hit more Fairways & Greens in regulation or better. As appreciation for me doing this 3-part video series, the WJTV-12 production team put together a Television promotional that they ran and that I could use in my golf training business.
It is critical also to maintain that baseball-type swing mentality, I even use a throw-down home plate in my practice and in my coaching sessions. One reason is that it places the golfer’s swing sequence in their hands for an instinctive golf swing with control instead of focusing on the clubface at the end of a shaft.
The big problem with golf is the shaft isn’t orientated in what the golfer is trying to perform with the clubface. If you place a baseball bat in the golfer’s hands and place the golf ball on a batting tee instead of a golf tee, the golfer would have no problem hitting the golf ball. This is exactly what I’m doing with the baseball-type golf swing.
First Muscle- Palmaris Longus Muscle/Tendon
Most people can actually see this tendon part of the Palmaris Longus muscle in their wrist. It performs the Dorsiflex, or hinge element, that represents the golfer taking the clubface (represented by the golfer’s right thumb) back square to the golf ball for square impact.
Second Muscle- Brachio-Radialis Muscle/Tendon
There is a nodule just above the golfer’s left thumb (the left thumb represents the golf shaft) where the tendon part of this muscle attaches. This muscle/tendon performs two of the most critical and unique golf swing maneuvers, it allows the golfer to instinctively open and close the clubface, a huge advantage for creating Power.
These places the golfer’s wrists into the Cock-Lock Position where I like to pause just for a moment to allow my wrists to sync up with my arms and shoulders.
The Takeaway and Downswing
Since I don’t want to interfere with the hinging, opening, and closing of my clubface, I want to take the thumbs to the top and drop them back down using the axes of my forearms, or the left and right Ulna bone. If you work on these simple sequential steps; you will hit more fairways and greens for par or better within weeks. WHY NOT MAKE GOLF FUN?
