GOLF SHOT CLOCK & Consistent Wrist Action– How to take Advantage of the Shot Clock and Wrist Action in the Golf Swing from Tee-to-Green

I GOT YOUR 6 ON THIS GAME CLOCK TECHNIQUE USED TO DEVELOP A MORE CONSISTENT GOLF GAME

Take the Shot Clock from Basketball, the Strike ZONE from Baseball and develop a simple 3-Piece muscle memory wrist action to Sync, Preset, Cock, and Lock in the golfer’s entire golf swing, from Tee-to-Green.

Ray Lewis, retired Middle Linebacker for Baltimore Ravens, stated that- Greatness is a lot of small things done well.

One of the premier golf swing coaches, David Leadbetter, wrote probably one of the best articles covering what is considered a revolutionary golf swing. This article appeared in the January 2002 issue of GOLF DIGEST on page 54, entitled- Your New Swing Starts Here, Eliminate your Takeaway mistakes with the ‘Swing of the Future’. What was interesting in the title of David’s Leadbetter’s article was how the Swing of the Future was to Eliminate your Takeaway mistakes. The word Mistakes is another word for inconsistency in the golfer’s game.

If there is one issue preventing the average golfer from making any significant improvement in their golf game, it is the lack of consistency. It’s like spinning your wheels in the snow and not getting any traction that doesn’t allow the golfer to make any headway in their golf game. If the golfer could develop consistency in the golf practice and game, they could shoot lower scores, lower their handicap, and lower their frustration level.

If there is one thing that is more maddening for the amateur golfer, it is hitting that rare, pro-like golf shot and then holding that photo finish pose and wondering how you executed such a golf shot. On those rare occasions, the amateur golfer can make that nice takeaway swing, solid contact with the golf ball on the correct swing plane and follow-through. Those are the golf shots that keep us coming back to the golf course. But there is a way you, the golfer, can perform these great pro-like golf shots on a more consistent basis. Let me explain HOW:

I would like to draw the amateur golfer’s attention to a term that they need to get familiar with that can allow them to improve their golf game and it is called Apperception. Apperception is where an athlete, in this case, can take motor skills (muscle memory) and techniques developed in one sport and use them to improve another sport, like their golf game.

Let’s Address our Motor Skills First

We have one shot to develop all of the fine motor skills (muscle memory) that we are going to use in our entire life, and these motor are developed before the age of 12. This is why sports plays such an important role in our young people’s lives to develop coordination, confidence, and consistency. Apperception plays a significant role in the golfer’s quest for a more consistent golf game.

There are three (3) motor skills that the golfer can developed from just swinging a baseball bat that could significantly improve their golf game for lower scores. These are three (3) of the six (6) wrist maneuvers that are normally performed with the wrist. This is one reason that David Leadbetter referred to the baseball swing in his article.

Heads up- The three (3) wrist actions in the golf swing are, see Figure No. 1, below called CPA, I’m not referring to a Certified Public Accountant Either:

  • Dorsiflex- Sync for Control (Palmaris Longus Muscle/Tendon)
  • Pronation- Preset for Power (Brachio-Radialis Muscle/Tendon)
  • Radial Deviation- Cock & Lock- for Acceleration (FE Carpi Radialis)

Figure No. 2- The SIX (6) Nature Wrist Action that we have done since before our first birthday that are also used in the baseball swing and golf swing for that turbocharged component.

3-Piece Motor Skills Apperception Applied to Golf

In David Leadbetter’s article, he referenced the baseball-type swing as the basis of The Golf Swing of the Future. Three (3) reasons for Mr. Leadbetter to use the baseball-type swing in the golf swing is:

FIRST– The baseball swing’s fine motor skills were developed at a very young age, even before the age of five.

SECOND– The baseball-type swing is more proactive, instead of being passive, as in golf. This is a huge advantage for the golfer to use, because the golfer is able to establish their rhythm. This is how the baseball batter swings their bat back-and-forth through the Strike Zone before locking their wrists into the Cock & Lock position staring down the pitcher.

And THIRD– How many baseball batters standing in the batter’s box have the same problems/issues that a golfer has standing on the Tee box? I would say NO WHERE NEAR THE ISSUES!

The best technique that I can reference using the these three motor skills of SYNC, PRESET, and COCK/LOCK is what’s called FUNGO hitting practice. This is where, in the case of a right-handed baseball coach, tosses the baseball up with their left wrist SYNC, before hitting the ball with the right wrist set in the PRESET and LOCK Position over their right shoulder. You usually see coaches using FUNGO hitting practice to get their team warmed-up before a game.

Look at the YouTube video below of this coach describing the techniques that he is using for hitting FUNGO Practice:

The only difference is for the right-handed golfer where the wrists maneuvers are swapped around:

The Dorsiflex for SYNC (Hinge) is performed with the right Palmaris Longus (or PALMER for short) Muscle/Tendon.

The Pronation for PRESET is performed with the left Brachio-Radialis (or BRACHS for short) Muscle/Tendon. Pronounced like the candy company.

The Radial Deviation for COCK is naturally performed with the left Extensor  & Flexor Carpi Radialis (or EF CARP for short).

Just a little HINT– The COCK component provides the golfer acceleration to provide loft to their golf shots. When the golfer gets around the green, back spin allows the golfer to put the breaks on pitch and chip shots for that soft. Look at my Bunt-Type Pitch shot YouTube below in my golf training facility:

The Bunt-Type Chip Shot

The Use of the Shot CLOCK

Refer to Figure No. 1, This is where the golfer can exercise and develop the next consistency in their golf game next to presetting their wrists described above. This is using a Shot Clock that they use in basketball. But we are going to take a clock face and lay it directly down under the golfer’s Strike Zone. Refer to the feature image, in Figure No. 1, on how my hands pass through the Strike Zone for the desired shape golf shot (4-10 Inside-Out for Draw, 4-08 Inside-In for Fade, and 4-09 Inside 9:00 O’clock for a Pike Shot).

The Use of the Strike Zone

How the baseball-type swing and the baseball Strike Zone can improve your golf game with consistency and accuracy.

I use the Strike Zone to preset the wrist action in the golf swing with my SYNC, PRESET, COCK, and LOCK that establishes 90- percent of my entire golf swing. This is a confined space that when I look down, I want to see my wrist in this Lock Position, in Figure No. 3 below.

Figure No. 3– SYNC, PRESET, COCK, and LOCK that establishes 90- percent of my entire golf swing shown here in the Preset Position like a baseball batter getting ready to take the handle of the bat to the top of the baseball swing.

I had an interview with a Vietnam POW who was held at the Hanoi Hilton for seven-and-a-half years and used his golf game to survive his captivity. Colonel George Robert Hall looked at Figure No. 3 below and confirmed how he knew he set the correct wrist action in the golf swing in his cell. Read my full interview with Col. Hall.

Now David Leadbetter referred to this golf swing technique that he included in an article in GOLF DIGEST as The Golf Swing of the Future. In actuality, my grandfather taught this golf swing technique to me at age 12, in 1969. He played both college baseball and golf and didn’t even differentiate between the two swings. His nephew was P.J. Boatwright, Sr. (with a ‘w’), the father of P.J. Boatwright, Jr., USGA Executive Director. Most states have a Boatwright Internship program.

THE ORANGE BUCKET CHALLENGE

I Explain This Baseball-Type Technique (SYNC, PRESET, COCK & LOCK) golf swing in a interview that I had with a Local Sports Show on WJTV-12. I’m using special golf balls that travel a third (1/3rd) of a distance of an actual golf ball where the film crew could capture where my drives were landing in regards to the orange bucket.

In the photograph below, I’m 64 years old. This photograph was taken after we did a FALL & WINTER Photo shoot (09Nov21) for our line of US WINGS® Leather Jacket that I carry in our online store. The camera crew challenged me to an AB Challenge where I’m posing without my shirt. I credit my DELPHI DIET & FITNESS System for my physical condition, and the condition of my skin.

The reason this photograph is significant is that I lost another 5 LBS from the last photo shoot back on November 09, 2021. This weight lost was over the holidays.

This photograph was taken on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 (a day in the low 60’s right before winter returned) after we did a photo shoot for our Winter line up of AMERICAN CLASSIC LEATHER JACKET COLLECTION. The camera crew doing this photo shoot couldn’t believe that I not only continue to lose weight and maintain my fitness, but did it during the Holidays. I’m 64 years old, soon to be 65 and in the best shape of my life thanks to The DELPHI AD DIET & FITNESS System.
