INSIDE THE LEATHER HEALTH & FITNESS SPORTS PERFORMANCE

The Golfer’s Holy Grail for creating more Power, Acceleration, and Clubhead Speed to hit more Fairways & Greens in Regulation or better on a consistent basis. It all comes down to discovering how to Preset-Sync your wrists into the Lock Position.

Understanding Your Golf Swing Mechanics Part 1– WHAT Produces Golfer’s Power, Speed, and Acceleration to Hit More Fairways & Greens in Reg.

If there is a Holy Grail in golf that every golfer is searching for and goes to the end of the earth in search of it would be Power, Acceleration, and Clubhead Speed, or PAC. All of these are combined to allow the golfer to develop consistency and improvement in their golf game. PAC is like the Triple Crown in the golfer’s game.

For clarification and simplicity, I will be referencing the right-hander golfer. For the left-handed golfer right and left references are interchanged in the following instructions. I will break down each part of the Triple Crown in the following details.

Before I get into the PAC components, I would first like to highlight the two bones and muscles in the forearm that have a major role to play in the golf swing sequence. The two bones are the Ulna and Radial bones and the two muscles/tendons are Brachio-Radialis and Palmaris Longus. The Ulna in each forearm is treated as the axis in the movement of the golf swing. The golfer just wants to move the axis alone.

The Ulna bones are considered axis just like the spinal axis in the golfer’s upper body where rotation revolves around. The midpoint of Ulna bone should be treated as the center of gravity. The swinging of the forearms should take place moving this midpoint of the Ulna bone to not interfere with the opening and closing of the clubface. The golfer doesn’t want to hinder the opening & closing of their clubface in anyway. Any interference with the radial bone is what causes slices or hooks to occur.

It is essential that the golfer takes the handle of the club to the top of the swing and drop the handle of the club back down through the strike zone using the midpoint of the Ulna bone for all regular golf shots.

I’m shown here in my golf training facility with a overhead shot to show how I Preset-Sync by wrists and my right elbow as if I’m standing in the batter’s box instead of the TEE box.

Lifting and dropping the handle of the golf club with the midpoint of both Ulna bones, allow the Radial bone to function unimpeded by opening and closing the clubface freely to create the essential clubhead speed.

There’s a nodule at the end of the left Radial bone and at the end of the right Ulna bone that allows the golfer to Preset (Pronate) and Sync (Dorsiflex) their wrists into the Lock Position. This type of Locking action prevents inconsistency of golf shots to make par or better.

The Two (2) essential wrist maneuvers the golfer must perform to create Power, Acceleration, and Clubhead Speed with Control on a consistent basis.

For the RIGHT-HANDED Golfer:

POWER Component

POWER- For the right-handed golfer, it is generated from the golfer’s left side (left wrist and left forearm) about the left Radial Styloid Process (or left Radial nodule).

Power is initiated with the Presetting (Pronation) of the left wrist using the Brachio-Radialis (or the *BRACHS for short) Tendon/Muscle that attaches at the left Radial nodule.

(*) BRACHS is pronounced like the candy company’s name.

Power for the right-handed golfer is represented by the left thumb that represents the handle of the golf club.

The left thumb will also indicate the proper swing plane to take the handle of the golf club to the top from the Lock Position. This applies to every golf club and for every golf shot from Tee-to-Green.

This allows the golfer to transfer momentum from the forearms and club through the golf ball for distance. Any baseball player with an above average Batting Average (BA) will tell you that their power comes from their forearms. Strength training of the forearms is among the best workout the golfer could perform.

CLUBHEAD SPEED Component

Clubhead Speed- For the right-handed golfer, is generated from the golfer’s right side (right wrist, forearm, and syncing of the right elbow with the right side). This was something that Arnold Palmer stressed in his clinics that he held.

Clubhead Speed- Is initiated with Syncing (Dorsiflex, or hinging) of the right wrist using the Palmaris Longus (or Palmer for short) Tendon/Muscle. What is nice about the Palmaris Longus (Palmer) Tendon is that this tendon in most of us that we can actually be seen in our lower forearm.

Clubhead Speed-Is represented by the right-handed golfer’s right thumb that represents the clubface of the golf club. The golfer can grip the golf club with a strong, neutral, or weak grip. These three (3) types of grips are in reference to how the right-handed golfer places their right thumb onto the handle of the golf club.

The right thumb will also indicate the open, square, and close clubface at impact with the golf ball to create shape shots (fades, square, or draws). The right thumb orientation applies to every golf shot from Tee-to-Green. The closer to the green the golfer gets, the right-handed golfer wants to have a neutral to weak grip on the handle of the golf club.

Clubhead Speed is what transfers control and centrifugal force through the golf ball.

WJTV-12 made an AD from the 3- Video Series Above

The 3- Part Video that I did for WJTV-12 SPORTS ZONE, Show above, was aired leading up to the 2021 US Open where I cover my golf training technique of taking my golf swing from the Batter’s Box to the Tee Box to hit more Fairways & Greens in regulation or better. As appreciation for me doing this 3-part video series, the WJTV-12 production team put together a Television promotional that they ran and that I could use in my golf training business.

ACCELERATION Component

Acceleration- For the right-handed golfer is generated from left and right nodules performing what is called Radial Deviation, or Cocking, of the wrists in unison at the Process Point mentioned above.

The Cocking (or Radial Deviation) of the both wrists uses the Abductor Pollicis longus (APL) Muscle.

Acceleration that is created by the Cocking of both wrists at the left Radial Nodule and the right Ulna Nodule provides two components to the golf ball, FIRST- Back spin and SECOND- Loft. Around the green Cocking with a neutral to weak grip generates the back spin to allow the golfer to create a softer landing on the green with a braking system to control roll-out.

The Importance of the Thumbs

Just focusing on the left and right thumbs allows the golfer to get a handle on their golf game literally for better consistency! What focusing on the thumbs does is it simplifies the golf swing by taking the shaft and clubhead out of the equation where the golfer feels they are in the batter’s box instead of on the tee box or from the fairway.

Golfer using their thumbs will allow the golfer to base their golf swing more on their baseball-type swing standing in the batter’s box where their subconscious mind can rely on a well developed muscle memory. This muscle memory is based on motor skills that were developed during early childhood development as a permanent instinctive reaction. No Thinking Needed. This applies to every golf shot from Tee-to-Green.

The LOCK Position

The Wrists shown in the Cock & Lock Position before the handle of the club is taken to the top of the golfer’s swing.

The Preset-Sync-Cock Maneuvers places the golfer’s wrists into the Lock Position where the golfer just pauses just for a moment before taking the handle of the golf club to the top in the direction of the left thumb. The left thumb will dictate the plane and path to the top of the golf swing for every golf shot from Tee-to-Green.

LOOK & FEEL

Two (2) of the most important senses that the golfer can use on the golf course to engage their subconscious mind is their sight to look down on how their wrists are in the Lock Position and feel in how the right elbow syncs and locks into position with their right rib cage. The is a ligament called the Osborne’s that is on the medial (inside) of the right elbow that is the missing link between the wrists and shoulders including the golfer’s upper and lower body.

The Osborne’s ligament is The Holy Grail that Indiana Jones was in search of, but in this case for in the golfer’s swing along with the Locking the wrists. For the right-handed golfer, Locking both wrists and right elbow next to their right side puts feeling back into the golfer’s game. What is nice about feeling in the golf swing is that it triggers our subconscious minds where all those muscle memories are located. This prevents the golfer from losing the loving feeling. If I don’t feel my Osborne’s Ligament touching my right side, I know something went seriously wrong.

This was what I discussed with Colonel George Robert Hall, a POW held at the Hanoi Hilton for over seven years, who used his golf game to survive until released in February of 1974. Please take time to read my interview with Col. Hall.

Also locking the right elbow was a technique that Arnold Palmer gave President Eisenhower before they were scheduled to play in a Charity Pro-Am for the American Heart Association.

Starting in May, I will be publishing The Sports Psychology Bible for Athletes that golfers will find useful as well.■
