Mental Toughest and Heart Trumps Skill– Perseverance Heart, and Mental Toughness Trumps Talent, Intelligence, or Ability on the Field
Sports are too important to the development of our youth not to encourage them to participate at some level either in sandlot or vacant fields in neighborhoods or in ballparks or stadiums in organized sports level. The muscle and mental development from these sporting activities are all essential to their early childhood development.
But there is one development that has enormous implications that it can’t even be weighed or measured and that is the mental toughness that these young kids developed what I call perseverance of character. The earlier this is formed the better for kids’ success in life. The spirit of never giving up or into adversity or difficulty is enormous. Because, the IMPOSSIBLE just takes a little longer to accomplish with one’s Faith- one’s Quiet Strength. Isaiah 30:15 in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength (KJV).
Yesterday, Monday, (28Feb2022) on the Matt Wyatt ESPN Radio Show on 105.9 FM ‘THE ZONE’ here in Jackson, Mississippi, a caller called in to Matt’s Radio Show discussing why Mississippi State University Baseball Team perform so well in 2021 leading up to their win of the College World Series. The caller pointed to how Coach Chris Lemonis recruiting practices looks for mental toughness first and foremost with talent being a very close second. I couldn’t agree with the caller more.
There isn’t a skill set that an athlete has that can trump mental toughness. It is proven everyday in life and in sports that mental toughness of perseverance trumps talent everyday and twice on Saturday. Talent and skill can become a mirage to an athlete’s confidence level, confidence in a moment can vanished in the very next second.
Golfer’s experience this mirage confidence in golf more than in any other sport, because golf is a game that is totally played out on the course between one’s ears. Talent and skill is what you do; whereas mental toughness is who you are at the core of your character. When everything else is stripped away because of lack of confidence, intimidation, or distractions; what you have left is you and your mental toughness, or your faith.
President Calvin Coolidge our 30th President of the United States had a great quote on Perseverance:
“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan Press On! has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.”
Press on! is another way to say never give UP or IN to your current situation but meet the obstacle head on and don’t ignore it, because like anything, it only gets worse as time goes on. There are FIVE WAYS an individual can develop mental toughness and perseverance (one’s faith):
ONE– Approach every situation in life that you’re going to take something from it to develop mentally- Use your failures to gain experience; and your successes to develop your confidence. There is no book or classroom out there that can teach you the irreplaceable value of experience. Experience and knowledge are too often confused with each other, they aren’t the same. You will learn more from your failures than your can learn from your successes in life.
TWO– Work and develop plans for what you have; and not for what you don’t have. Focus on what you have do. Thinking about what you don’t have is only a distraction and a mirage.
THREE– Focus more on what you have to do and not on what you want to do.
FOUR– Focus more and think less. And never hesitate!
FIVE– Develop your faith and trust in your training. NEVER GIVE UP! Faith is nothing more than putting your belief into practice. When you strengthen your faith (mental toughness), you strengthen your endurance, perseverance, and character. And faith isn’t an adjective but a verb. It has to be placed into action to be useful ■
