The ASPEN Coaching Model to Improve Sports Performance– How to Use The Auto-APP of Situational Awareness to Get In and Perform IN THE ZONE

Auto– stands for AutodidactAPPApperception is a Self-Coaching Model using skills you have already developed for one sport and learning how to apply them to another sport. This is like using skills you developed in the batter’s box and developing skills on the tee box for a more consistent golf game.  

Autodidact– is essentially a Self-Coaching process of taking those skills you developed in the baseball swing and developing a golf swing. This is Apperception of being able to transfer those skills from your baseball swing, of presetting the wrists action, to your golf game. You have to work on your own time during practice sessions performing the nuts and bolts to actually see performance. Whatever the coach teaches you is a thought process that doesn’t become instinctive until you have developed an intuitive or a natural habit and routine that doesn’t change.

Just a little background on Autodidact– The coach can’t perform for you on the field, court, or course this is all you, essentially you the athlete will have to rely on your own training, developing the needed techniques and routines before you can perform in your ZONE. These techniques have to be instinctive and natural without having to THINK. THINKING IS NOT PERFORMING!      

Using Autodidact and Apperception ASPEN Coaching Pyramid

We develop all our fine motor skills before we reach the age of 12. These are all the skills that we have to work with in our toolbox for the rest of our natural life to perform with in sports. So if you want to become proficient at either baseball or golf, you’re going to pull from your toolbox. Your skills in your tool box (mainly wrist action) allows you to play IN THE ZONE, you will have to follow four steps that will make your baseball or golf swing instinctive:

1.   Develop Natural and Repetitive Routine task.

2.   Practice and perform under actual conditions that must exist in both.

3.   Rely on a high degree of: relaxation, confidence, and muscle memory.

4.        Allow the Subconscious mind to takeover and Dominate the conscious mind, or being IN THE ZONE, just focus on your objective or use Projection Techniques.

When one focuses on their objective it prevents their conscious mind from interfering with the subconscious mind’s ability where all your muscle memory that are instincts are located. Like Yogi Berra stated about batting- How can a batter think and hit at the same time? the answer is the batter CAN’T neither can the golfer!

Remember one of the best golf coaching statements in Sports was in the movie Caddyshack:

Be the Ball quote: (Ty Webb- played by Chevy Chase mentioned to Danny Noonan- played by Michael O’Keefe) I’m going to give you a little advice. There’s a force in the universe that makes things happen. And all you have to do is get in touch with it, stop thinking, let things happen, and be the ball.

Breaking down the Be the Ball quote:

Force in the Universe– is the capabilities of your Subconscious mind.

Get in touch with it– focus your attention on your objective to project your performance.

Stop Thinking– Look at Rule No. 9 below in the 10- Rules of the Subconscious mind.

Let Thing happen– Let your natural instincts take over your performance.

If your baseball swing or golf swing isn’t instinctive, you aren’t going to perform your skills, techniques, and routine in the batter’s box or on the tee box; that you will count on in the batter’s box or on the tee box.

My Guarantee Performance Statement:

I can guarantee the baseball batter or golfer this one thing– You might very well practice your baseball or golf swing for hours and weeks in the back yard, garage, batting cage, or practice range going through your swing thoughts trying to establish your swing sequence. But, once the batter or golfer steps foot into the batter’s box or onto the tee box YOUR subconscious mind will take over your entire swing sequence and disregard and override your swing thoughts in their conscious mind. Your baseball or golf swings has to be instinctive to be able for the batter or golfer to perform their swing sequence in the batter’s box or on the tee box, I CAN GUARANTEE IT!

This is how I use my Baseball Swing to develop my golf swing in every hit that I make.

Let be leave you with these Four (4) fundamental, You’re going to be your best coach you will ever have based on these techniques.

The WJTV-12 Television Station here in Jackson, Mississippi used these three videos to make a promo for me, below:

The reason that I’m using my AlmostGOLF Balls that only travel a third (1/3rd) of the distance of an actual golf ball is because the camera crew wanted to use just one camera setup and capture the entire flight of my tee shots, they were concern that they couldn’t capture where my tee shots that were landing within 15- feet of the Orange Bucket that represented a 300- yard tee shot.

Here are the 10- Rules of the Subconscious mind that form the base of the ASPEN Self-Coaching Pyramid:

  1. The subconscious mind does not and must not differentiate between visualizations (practice) and real situations (performance).
  2. Your subconscious feels that time passes faster.
  3.  The Quicker and longer the subconscious mind believes and proves something, the harder it will be to alter this belief in any way.
  4. Every thought causes a physical reaction. The subconscious mind can’t distinguish between a positive or negative thought.
  5. What you expect tends to be realized.
  6. Finding proof of your beliefs strengthens them.
  7. The subconscious mind always prevails in conflicts with the conscious mind.
  8. An idea, once accepted, will remain firmly in place until it is replaced by another.
  9. The greater the conscious effort reduces the subconscious intuitive response.
  10. Suggestions and beliefs can be used to “program” the subconscious mind.

If you Look at Rule No’s. 1, 5, and 9 will explain why the golfer or baseball batter can’t take their practice from the hitting cage or range to the tee box or batter’s box. In baseball they refer to this as the Five-O’clock Batter. This concerns the Prep/Performance step in the ASPEN Self-Coaching Pyramid.

Like my lineman Foreman once stated- Chuck, It isn’t what you’re doing that matters, BUT it is HOW you look do it that does matter!

In the photograph below, I’m 64 years old. This photograph was taken after we did a WINTER Photo shoot (18Jan22) for our line of US WINGS® Leather Jacket that I carry in our online store. We took advantage of an unseasonable warm January day in the mid-60’s to do this photo shoot. The camera crew challenged me to an AB Challenge where I’m posing without my shirt.
