Getting Inside the Leather Sports Page- GOLF APP Off-Season to Work on Your Game in Your Garage- Like Riding a Bicycle, You Don’t Forget How!

How a Vietnam POW held at the Hanoi Hilton for over seven years used his golf game to survive. I had the honor and pleasure of meeting and interviewing Colonel George Robert Hall, an Air Force Pilot who was shot down over North Vietnam on September 27, 1965.

I was attending a meeting with an ALCOA representative at the Hattiesburg Country Club in Mississippi in March of 2002. As I was leaving the meeting, I saw a Veteran setting up tables for a golf benefit. This Veteran setting up the tables was none other than Col. Hall.

Read my full interview with Col. Hall:

A little bit of background on Col. Hall:

·         He had a 4-handicap and played golf at Ole Miss before attending the Naval Academy.

·         At the Naval Academy, Col. Hall was captain of the golf team.

·         He was released from Hanoi Hilton on February 12, 1974.

·         In March of 1974, he was invited to play in The Greater New Orleans Open Pro-AM where he shot his handicap.

For seven-and-a-half years, Col. Hall was starved, mentally and physically tortured, and within a month after being released , Col. Hall shot a 76 on one of the biggest stages in golf. Col. Hall was invited to play with the best golfers at the Greater New Orleans POW Pro-AM Open.

You just don’t shoot a 76 at a PGA tournament because you developed a great, physical golf game. Col. Hall proved what Bobby Jones, Sr. stated about the game of golf- Golf is a game that is played on a five-inch course – the distance between your ears. This quote couldn’t be more true than with Col. Hall as a POW at the Hanoi Hilton. Actually, golf is all mental, which is a great advantage for golfers during the off-season. A garage is a great practice area to work on your golf game.

I had in my flight bag that I carried everywhere, my golf coaching outline. Col. Hall, after learning my last name was Boatright, looked over my notes in detail. After 15- minutes of reviewing my outline, he stated that these were similar techniques that he used to virtually play his golf rounds everyday as a POW in his small cell.

Col. Hall pointed specifically to how I explained the preset technique of the wrist action that was similar to his techniques that he used in his cell. Col. Hall explained that since he was in a confined space without a club or golf ball, he had to rely on how he preset his wrists with just a stick he had.

What is significant about the wrist action in my outline is what became the QATR- 411 Palmer D-PRO Golf TECH that can be performed in the same area where you practice your putting. I have demonstrated the Palmer D-PRO Golf TECH in my Bunt-Type Pitch training video, below:

This is the same wrist action that is used with a driver off the tee box or with a SW around the green. I would however strongly suggest that you have a backstop set up to catch those long pitch shots, as I have done in the above training video.

Testimonial- I had some days that I could get out on my farm to hit a series of golf shots. I experienced no effects of being off the golf course for a month, due to weather. I used a driver through SW and made accurate shots with all of the clubs in my bag. The QATR 411- Palmer D-PRO Golf TECH is great for the off- season training in your garage.
