TOP GUN: MAVERICK Mission Impossible– Made Possible by the Elite TOP GUN U.S. NAVY Aviators that developed Instincts/Trust in Their Training
What we admire about the two TOP GUN movies with Tom Cruise is the fine line between uncontrolled panic and a calm and collective performance under extreme aerial combat situations. TOP GUN: MAVERICK is no exception to the first TOP GUN Movie. This is about taking TOP GUN aviators and preparing them for an impossible mission with extreme physical and mental demands.
NOTE: For athletes, at the end of this article are four (4) training situational awareness conditions that help pilots and aviators perform at a high level that can be applied in your practice and training. These were demonstrated during TOP GUN: MAVERICK Movie.
The Official TOP GUN: MAVERICK Trailer:
If anyone has ever pulled 4-to-5 G’s in an aircraft, they know what demands that are placed on the human mind and body, much less pulling 9-plus G’s in the F/A-18 Super Hornet. The pilots and aviators not only have to deal with the physical demands, but the mental demand of making split-second decisions. This is why TOP GUN is the gold standard for performance in all other areas of our life, especially in sports. What Maverick is doing is conditioning these aviators to perform in a real life situation that they will be facing.
Aviators have to rely heavily on their training, referred to as Situational Awareness, to control their adrenaline in the cockpit. The release of adrenaline is a totally normal response, and what you want to occur to heighten your concentration, instincts, and awareness to focus on and trust or have FAITH in your training. If you don’t believe in FAITH, you never flown before!
Panic occurs when an aviator hesitates over that split-second decision, allowing adrenaline to flood the nervous system blocking every instinctive response they are depending on to perform. In the movie THE ROCK, Sean Connery told Nicolas Cage– Never hesitate! Like Maverick mentioned in both movies, If you have to think, you’re dead. There is a connection between these two movies, Ed Harris is in both of these movies, The Rock and TOP GUN: MAVERICK. He is one of my favorite actors, along with Scott Glenn and Tom Skerritt.
When you watch TOP GUN: MAVERICK, either for the first time or for a return viewing, appreciate the adrenaline mixed with the G-forces over 9 that these actors and their Navy aviators are encountering. These type G-forces can place stresses in excess of 900 LBS. on the body. Your interior organs are being crushed, even with a pressure suit. These aviators are in top shape to counter the demands of aerial maneuvers, especially those encountered during aerial combat.
In this movie, TOP GUN: MAVERICK, Tom Cruise is preparing his team to fly at the edge of the envelope to complete what is considered a MISSION IMPOSSIBLE! This movie features two flight jackets that we supply the U.S. NAVY, U.S. MARINE CORPS, and the U.S. COAST GUARD. Both the CWU-45P Nylon and the classic G-1 Leather Flight Jackets with the brown fur collar have the same TOP GUN Patches that appear in this Movie.

Athletes- THIS a takeaway from TOP GUN: MAVERICK Movie you can apply directly to your conditioning and training for Situational Awareness:
- Develop Natural and Repetitive Routine tasks.
- Practice and perform under actual conditions that must exist in both.
- Rely on a high degree of: relaxation, confidence, and muscle memory.
- Allow the Subconscious mind to project to takeover and Dominate the conscious mind, or being IN THE ZONE.
I use this same technique in my coaching and fitness training.
