Developing your golf game to be as classic as the Chevrolet 1963 Corvette performance

Three (3) Important Rules of Sports Psychology to know, understand, and use to improve your performance, both on and off the field of play

The mind is a terrible thing to waste in your performance, since it accounts for 90% of our performance, which is mental.

One of the renowned athletes in modern times was Yogi Berra, not only for his athletic skills, but also for his Yogiisms. The other is Bobby Jones, Sr. for his skills on the golf course and his academic background in Engineering and Law. Both men had famous quotes that are still with us today and are still applicable today.

Yogi Berra: Baseball is 90% mental and the other half is physical.

Bobby Jones, Sr.: Golf is a game that is played on a five-inch course – the distance between your ears.

The Three Major Rules of the Subconscious Mind

There are a total of 10 Mental Rules of the subconscious mind, but three (3) of these are crucial for the athlete in any sport to learn and use in their practice and especially the athlete’s performance.

Rule No. 1- The subconscious mind does not and must not differentiate between visualizations and real situations.

Rule No. 2- Your subconscious mind feels that time passes faster.

Rule No. 10- Suggestions and beliefs can be used to “program” the subconscious mind.

Rule No. 1 is an important concept to apply both to an athlete’s practice and performance. It is one reason that in Football, coaches use scrimmage-type practices to train players. This is one reason why golfers find it difficult to take their practice from the range or backyard to the course, even if it was something the golfer just worked on at the range.

What occurs is that the golfer is using their conscious mind on the range to hit golf shots. But when the golfer steps foot onto the first tee box, they are relying on their subconscious mind. So the golfer who spent time just before their round hitting golf shots, if not weeks on their golf game, has just been disregarded by their subconscious mind. The main reason is the golfer’s subconscious mind, which is responsible for 90 percent of their performance, just trashed the hours spent training. Now you know the rest of the story.

How to incorporate Rule No. 1 into the golfer’s training sessions – Go back to scrimmage-type practices. After you warm up and hit some golf shots, now train your subconscious mind. On the golf course, the golfer doesn’t hit all of their golf shots from one location. They either walk, as I do on the golf course, or ride to the next shot. This is the first difference the golfer is facing.

The major difference that exists on the golf course that doesn’t occur during practice is the golfer’s adrenaline. You remember Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’s story when Dr. Jekyll drank the Kool-Aid, or the elixir, that turned the mild-mannered Dr Jekyll into the deranged Mr. Hyde, and for the golfer, it is their adrenaline.

Adrenaline can either sharpen and improve the golfer’s focus and performance, or cause the golfer to have anxiety and have the case of the nerves. What I do to develop adrenaline is to use the 405-Training Drill for the last part of my practice session. I want to hit 4 out of 5 golf shots, where my shots fall within my drop zone. From tee-to-green on a scaled-down par-4, I want my shots to fall within a 10% area, in feet, of my yardage.

Between series of the five shots, I walk at a fast pace to my next series of golf shots to develop my adrenaline. I repeat the same procedure down to my approach shot, including my chip and pitch shots.

Even if you don’t have a large area to practice in, you can still use the same 405-Training Drill procedure where you practice your putting, like I have in my YouTube Video below. The camera or I-Phone is another great training technique to develop your adrenaline. Just have a backstop in place to catch those wayward shots.

Rule No. 2- Your subconscious mind feels that time passes faster.

This is an important approach to your golf game. Your mind performs at a faster pace than your muscles can be engaged. For the first three holes, swing and walk at a slower pace, until your body catches up with your mind.

The first thing the golfer wants to do is to start changing their golf mechanics and techniques up because their golf game isn’t working. The issue is like warm-ups before you play or exercise. The golfer has to warm up their muscles on the golf course.

Rule No. 10- Suggestions and beliefs can be used to “program” the subconscious mind.

Here’s the big one, the golfer has to get in the habit and focus on what they want to do and not on what they don’t want to do. Every suggestion the golfer has will program their subconscious mind, which is responsible for 90 percent of your performance on the course.

Here’s another key to your subconscious mind’s performance. The subconscious mind doesn’t differentiate between positive and negative instructions. This is key to your golf game.

If the golfer just focuses on what they don’t want to do, instead of what they want to do for a particular golf shot, your subconscious mind will perform the program that it is given. So the golfer standing on the tee box is thinking, I don’t want to hit my tee shot into the water hazard along the right fairway. Guess what you just instructed your subconscious mind to do– I want to hit my tee shot into the water. Sounds familiar, well it should.

Concentrate on these three Rules of the Subconscious mind and your subconscious mind will be your best friend on the golf course the next time you practice and play.
