How to Create Additional Loft and Backspin on Your Golf Ball
5.8 The natural UN-cocking of the wrists: Ulna deviation (acceleration component) of pivoting right Hypothenar causes additional loft and backspin to occur during the ball’s flight, making the ball lighter during flight. This is the same principle that creates lift on the airplane’s wings, according to Bernoulli’s law. This law states that differences in air pressure cause lift to occur on the wings. The backspin of the golf ball from acceleration component, up the clubface, is between 3,600 rpm (for the driver) and 6,400 rpm (for the sand wedge). This creates the lift and backspin on the ball. The backspin causes the air, moving over the top of the ball, to travel faster than the air flowing against the backspin along the bottom of the golf ball, where the air is slower. This causes lift to occur.
5.8.1 Ulna Deviation (UN-cock, Red Arrow)- During the downswing the wrists will unhinge just when the hands enters the strike zone. This will cause the clubface to accelerate through impact allowing the clubface to impart back spin on the golf ball causing lift to occur. This is real useful around the green for putting the brakes on for the pitch-type shots described in Section 3.3.
NOTE: This is a very useful technique the golfer needs to develop for those finesse shots around the green to get it close to the pin.
