Background History of the A-2 Leather Flight Jacket that we Supply the U.S. Military
The classic A-2 Leather Flight Jacket was developed shortly after World War 1 ended. The end of World War I was due, in large part, to the 1918 Spanish Flu Pandemic that killed more men than died on the battlefield.
It was due to the Spanish Flu that influenced that redesign of the A-1 Leather Flight Jacket. The U.S. Military saw the importance of protecting their pilots from infectious diseases. These pilots played a critical role in providing air support to ground troops, escorts, and bombing missions.
The A-2 Upgrade that was Made:
The upgrades included the elastic banded cuffs, elastic waistband, zipper clap, neck hook, and a solid one piece back panel to reduce infiltration of diseases. These upgrades prevented viruses and bacteria from becoming embedded on the pilot’s clothing. Besides providing protection from the weather elements, the new A-2 Leather Flight Jacket also protected pilots and elite paratroopers, like the 82nd and 101st Airborne, from infections that could ground them from their missions.

I wear my A-2 Leather Flight Jacket eleven months out of the year as a sports jacket. Cleaning & Care of the US WINGS® A-2 Leather Flight Jacket
During this COVID-19 Pandemic, I don’t leave the house without wearing my US WINGS® Leather Flight Jacket, because of the ease of cleaning and sanitizing. I just remove my jacket and wipe it down with a mixture of dish detergent (1- teaspoon) and water (8 oz.) and hang it up to dry when I return home.
The sensitization is a major concern of medical staff, these heroes who are working in our medical centers and hospitals. I have a neighbor who is an RN who works at the local hospital. This is her biggest concern when returning home from her shift. She even airs out her vehicle in the sun’s UV rays.
