The A-10 Grim Reaper that Really is an Angle– If You’re in an Airborne Unit Dropped in Hot Zone, A-10 Warthog Thunderbolt is the Grim Reaper
The Airborne Units are essentially light Infantry dropped for supporting role and in enemy territory mainly carrying their M-4, M-14 (my preference), M-249 the SAW (22 Lbs.), or the M-60 (23 Lbs.). The only issue with the M-249 and the M-60 is the weight. Their side arm pistol is either the new M17 or the old trusted Model 1911 45 ACP, with grenades, and shoulder-launch missiles e.g., Javelin.
If the Airborne has any support it is either artery, or close air support from Blackhawks, Apache, or Cobras rotorwing or our favorite the fixed wing A-10 Thunderbolt Warthog with its 30mm GAU-8/seven-barrel Gatling gun, or cannon. The A-10 is essentially a cannon with wings. It is an aircraft built around and rapid fired cannon!
The Gatlin gun develop by Richard Jordan Gatling in 1862 and the Model 1911 Pistol developed by John Browning in 1911 have a military presence today.
When you’re dropped in a hostile hot drop zone where the enemy forces are surrounding your position they, the opposing forces, usually have either light to heavy armor. Your equalizer is The A-10 Warthog that can provide you great close aerial support when called upon. The A-10, a.k.a. flying bathtub because of its protection it provides the pilot is what we affectionately referred to as ‘The Grim Reaper‘. It earns its nickname in the battlefield, because you feel sorry for your enemy (those Pauvres Bâtons) that has to face that 30mm Gatling gun that can fire up to 3,900 rounds per minute.
The 30mm Gatling gun is in addition to 16,000 pounds of mixed ordnance it can carry also that includes napalm that can discourage your enemy from engaging your position. The Blackhawks, Apache, or Cobras rotorwing are always welcome in providing supporting roles, but the A-10 with its heavy armor that can hang around that can take a lick and keep on flying is a huge bonus for the Airborne units.
The rotorwing is great as secondary close air support that includes resupplying and extractions ground units in addition to firepower it brings to the battle. But they are all valuable to ground fire, whereas the A-10 like the B-17 Bomber, The Flying Fortress, can take a beating and still fly. My hat is off to Fairchild Republic Industry for developing the Grim Reaper, or the A-10.

The Grim Reaper The Game Changer
In World War II, they had the P-51 Mustang, shown above, that was given the nickname Angle on our Shoulders that ground personnel in forward areas referred to it as. But the A-10, The Grim Reaper, was a flying fortress that has been in existence since 1976. The A-10 is kind of like the B-52, The Stratofortress, that is still has its usefulness in combat roles, but with its advanced avionics. The C-130 and now the C-17 are used to deploy the Airborne units; but the A-10 can be your game changer on the battlefield.
The U.S. Air Force has a motto that they told us in the 101st- You Call, We Haul, That’s All! But with the A-10 Warthog the motto changed to- You Call, We Haul by bring you our Warthog. I can’t think of a better friend to have in the sky providing you so much needed and appreciated close aerial support than the Grim Reaper.
If they had the A-10 Warthog, or the Grim Reaper, on D-Day at Normandy, the invading forces would have had a huge tactical advantage taking the beaches and establishing a beachhead. The German pillboxes and machine gun nests could have been neutralized in minutes with limited effect on landing forces on the five beaches.
I hope the U.S. Air Force can keep this Grim Reaper around for future Airborne, regular infantry missions, and Special Forces Operations. It gives the ground forces a force multiplier and a sense of comfort in close air support.
