The 2 Key Elements of the Golfer’s Game– Entire Golf Swing Hinges on These 2 Elements of Sync and Preset to Complete 90 Percent of the Swing
I was born on the same date as Henry David Thoreau whose major philosophy that I have studied that was to keep things simple. The simpler a process is the more repetitive and consistent it can be executed to build the golfer’s confidence. Consistency develops confidence that can’t be replaced with either talent or skill. As the golfer knows all to-well on the golf course, the golfer’s confidence is king.
There are four (4) conditions that must be in place for an golfer to develop a Zone-Like Confidence on and off the golf course:
- Develop Natural and Repetitive Routine task.
- Practice and perform under actual conditions that must exist in both.
- Rely on a high degree of: relaxation, confidence, and muscle memory.
- Allow the Subconscious mind to project to (focus) to be IN THE ZONE.
These work in any sport or any other task as well!
Breaking Down the Four (4) Conditions
Natural and Repetitive
Natural and Repetitive is essential in the golf swing that initiated with the smaller quicker muscles in the wrists and forearms. Basic kinesiology 101 states that smaller muscles must lead the larger slower muscles in the arm, shoulders, and torso to avoid injuries and improve effectiveness in sports. This is a basic fact and principle of any athletic performance. This is why the wrists must lead by syncing and presetting the golf swing from the start.
Routine and Conditions
I can’t even stress the importance of CONDITIONS enough, or what I refer to it as CONDITIONING! If you are going to come up short in your performance this is the primary area, your conditioning.
The key to developing a consistent routine for the golfer is to convince their subconscious mind with the proof and verification under actual condition. The subconscious mind runs the entire show on the golf course. If the golfer ever wonders why they can’t take their practice session to the golf course, this is the reason. While we might practice our golf swing and game using our conscious mind, we play golf with our subconscious mind. I can guarantee any golfer this, once the golfer steps foot on the golf course their subconscious mind will takeover and dominate the golfer’s entire game!
This is why the golfer must develop course-like conditions during their practice-drill sessions to train the subconscious mind based on a consistent routine. Another great method is to videotape your drills hitting a limited number of golf shots to a define target and try to hit the majority of those shots within a specified distance of a designated target. Look at my Orange Bucket Drill that I start and finish all my practice sessions and my rounds with. The key to any practice session isn’t the duration; but the frequency of those practice sessions.
Here’s an example of the importance of practicing and training under the similar conditions that you will be performing under that requires all of your Mind, Body, and Soul. During the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Marathon that was help in 2021 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Remember these all are Olympic class athletes that are at the top of their field. Tokyo like Mississippi is HOT & HUMID and if you are going to compete or work under these hot and humid conditions you got to train and condition your mind, body, and soul for these conditions.
Eliud Kipchoge won the race handily turning in a time of 2:08:36 with the next runner finishing second with a time of 2:09:58, almost a full minute lead. What was unique about the Marathon competition was the number of runners dropping out along the course due to heat exhausting. But Eliud Kipchoge, from Kenya was running almost a effortless race like the heat and humidity wasn’t even phasing him. Again you have to qualify to represent your country and train. But this 2021 Tokyo Marathon underscore the vase difference between training and the importance of conditioning the Body, Mind, and Soul for actual conditions.
Even when I workout in my GYM, I use the Strength and Conditioning model six (6) days per week. My GYM is in the attic space over my Golf Training Facility and photography studio. My GYM IS NOT air-conditioned on purpose where temperatures can reach 118 degrees Fahrenheit during the summer months between 12 and 4 O’clock. This as allowed me to work on my farm, play golf here in Mississippi during the Summer months walking the golf course, all 8.76 miles of it with a 45 lb. golf bag.
Relaxed, Confidence, Muscle Memory
Adrenaline is key to the golfer’s performance in order to be able to hardwire into their instinctive muscle memory of the subconscious mind. The more relaxed the golfer is in their performance the more instinctive muscle memory for a natural swing sequence. Anxiety causes tension, overloading the nervous system with adrenaline that takes the golfer out of their routine. The only thing more important than confidence in the golfer’s game is the golfer’s routine.
Adrenaline Overload is like flooding the small two or four cycle engine. If you ever try to start your lawn mower or chain saw and left the choke engaged past when the engine start to kick in, you realize what the golfer is experiencing on the golf course. Anxiety or tension is like the golfer over choking their start up.
Keying In The Golfer’s Power Pack, the Subconscious Mind
The key to consistency is to have the first two (2) elements in the golf swing sequence well-established to initiate the rest of the natural golf swing. The first two (2) elements will place the wrists into the Lock Position like the batter standing in the batter’s box, shown below of me. From this Lock Position the golf swing essentially became a baseball-type swing technique where the golfer just takes the handle of the club to the top of the swing and drops the handle back down through the strike zone.
The reason it seems like the baseball swing is easier for the golfer to execute than their golf swing is, the baseball swing starts from this Lock Position. Because the batter is starting from the Lock Position they have already preset their wrists, where 80 percent of their swing has already been completed. There are just two (2) natural instinctive moves needed for the golfer to be in the baseball Lock Position to deliver Power, Acceleration, and Clubhead Speed. I call the Lock Position the Torque Converter Technique. These two (2) maneuvers are Sync (Hinge) and Preset (Cock) maneuvers. What I have illustrated below is in reference to the right handed golfer. The left-handed golfer just swaps the two wrists.
Sync– is like prepare to throw a baseball with the right wrist called Dorsiflex, shown below:
Preset– is like prepare to case a rod in fishing with the left wrist performing the Radial Deviation maneuver, shown below:
Performing these two (2) maneuvers will place the golfer’s wrists into the Lock Position. Shown below:
Kickboxing Gloves to Sync and Preset the Wrists
Coaching golf that is part of my sports performance company, I have my students put on a different type of gloves, kickboxing gloves. I use kickboxing gloves to allow them to experience and see the wrist that are stacked at Address Position. Then I have them perform the Sync and Preset into the Lock Position. I tell them to hold that Lock Position for a moment and look at their wristbands. They can’t believe two (2) simple maneuvers (Sync and Preset) place their wrists into the Lock Position where the top of both wristbands are aligned with each other.
If you perform the Sync and Preset maneuvers into the Lock Position above, you just have to take that handle of the club to the top of the swing like a batter would do. From the top, the golfer just has to drop their wrists back down through the strike zone, another baseball reference. You perform the Sync and Preset into the Lock Position you will hit more fairways and greens in regulation for Par or better.
Below is my Orange Bucket Challenge where I explain the Sync and Preset:

WJTV-12 made an AD from the 3- Video Series Above
I did a 3- Part Video for WJTV-12 SPORTS ZONE Show leading up to the 2021 US Open where I cover my golf training technique of taking my golf swing from the Batter’s Box to the Tee Box to hit more Fairways & Greens in regulation or better. As appreciation for me doing this 3-part video series, the WJTV-12 production team put together a Television promotional that they ran and that I could use in my golf training business.
Remain focus on the first 2 elements (SYNC & PRESET) in the golf swing; everything else will follow after naturally for an instinctive golf swing sequence.
The biggest asset that any golfer can have to improve their golf game is to improve their Health and Fitness, A stronger athlete is a better athlete, Below, I’m in my GYM working out on my boxing bag. I did this photoshoot for a fellow photographer that needed boxer working out with a boxing bag. In this photograph, I’m 65 years old:
