BaseballvsGolfswing

I live in Madison, Mississippi, just about 45 miles east of Vicksburg, where General Grant called Vicksburg the ‘Key to the South.’ This siege ended one day after the Battle of Gettysburg, on 04Jul1863. I found that Mississippi can also be a key to improve your golf swing to release an amazing amount of power and speed for distance. The only problem is, it is very simple. This is like a baseball-type swing using the Metronome effect for your golf swing and putting.

In my book, “The ESPY Golf Swing Coach,” I stress the importance of a slow takeaway to promote a great downswing through impact. Refer to Sections 1.13.2, 2.6.1, and 7.9. The reason for the slow pace takeaway, like LPGA Pro Inbee Park has, is that it allows the larger muscles in the upper torso, hip, and upper quads of the legs to fully coil and uncoil. The larger muscles coil and uncoil slower than the smaller muscles in the forearms.

You will be surprised how ONE-MISSISSIPPI in the takeaway, from the LOCK position, and TWO-MISSISSIPPI in the downswing from the top will help you produce power and speed in your simple golf swing. TWO-MISSISSIPPI will prevent the golfer from being too fast at the top and casting the club.

This is how I set up the count:

1. After the SYNCH and PROTRACT to the LOCK position, I count (to myself) ONE-MISSISSIPPI back to the top of my swing, in the YAW element. (This is used, regardless of a full swing or the orange chip and red pitch shots.)

2. The important PAUSE at the TOP. I have a brief pause before counting TWO-MISSISSIPPI for the downswing.

3. The downswing is performed at a pace of TWO-MISSISSIPPI just at impact. The follow-through is not a part of the TWO-MISSISSIPPI count.

This can also can be used in the putting stroke, as mentioned by Martin Hall on the School of Golf on Golf Channel. You will develop a nice and easy golf swing with Rhythm (elements) and Tempo (time).

You just read about the sound of golf with using cadence for rhythm. The sight of golf is the traffic light used for shot selection.

The colors that I used to represent the Chip and Pitch shots provide me with a great mental picture of how I want the ball to react after impact. Refer to Section 3 of my book.

• Orange (CAUTION) Chip is like an airborne putt, with controlled rollout.

• Red (STOP) Pitch is like airborne shot that checks up after impact around the pin.

Your mind responds to color better than to words like CHIP or PITCH! A great mental image that I use for a proper golf shot is a traffic light with these colors:

Traffic Light Golf

This is the bottom-up decision process!

• RED- for red pitch golf shots, with maximum loft and little to no roll-out

• ORANGE- for orange chip golf shots, with minimum loft and controlled roll-out. This is like an airborne putt.

• GREEN- for green full golf shots for maximum distance and roll-out.

A Recommendation for your Golf Game:

I would like to recommend a wonderful radio program that I regularly listen to on my I-Heart Radio app to KARN 102.9 FM station out of Little Rock, AR. They air a golf show called “Arkansas Fairways and Greens,” at 7:00 AM CT each Saturday morning, hosted by Bob Steel and Jay Fox. Bob occasionally has on his show a guest named Shawn Humphries, a Professional Golf Instructor from Dallas, Texas. One thing that Mr. Humphries stresses is the mental part of golf, not focusing on the results but the process.

Until next time– Be Synched, Tee-to-Green, with The ESPY Golf Swing!
