NASA Launches 1st Manned Space Mission Since 2011 to the ISS as a joint venture with SpaceX from Kennedy Space Center in almost 9-years
SpaceX will send NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley on a test flight on board Dragon spacecraft. The last time a manned Shuttle flight launched from Kennedy Space Center/Cape Canaveral was on July 8, 2011. That’s almost 9- years that America hasn’t launched from the Kennedy Space Center a manned mission.
It is almost unthinkable that we didn’t have a means to send personnel and supplies to the International Space Station (ISS), without depending on Russia or another country to send manned missions into space. The first American into space was Navy Commander Alan Shepard to perform a suborbital flight on May 5, 1961.
The space race not only opened a new frontier of space to manned flight, but it also launched a technological revolution in technology that gave us the electronic age. The Apollo Mission that fulfilled the goal of President John F. Kennedy to land a man on the moon before the decade was out, made advancement, in not only technology, but medicine, and engineering, and other developments we enjoy every day.
Peace Through Strength
The Launch that is scheduled to take place, weather permitting, on May 27, 2020 also marks the start of the new Branch of the U.S. Military, the Space Force, that President Donald J. Trump announced on December 20, 2019. This branch of the U.S. Military mission is to defend and protect our satellite communication network and exploration of space, including returning to the moon again.
I’m old enough to remember the Mercury, Gemini, and the Apollo programs of fulfilling President John F. Kennedy commitment to explore space and land a man on the moon. As a young boy seeing NASA send rockets including the Saturn Five Rocket into space made me to think about engineering for my career.
The Space Force will be formed under the Branch of the Air Force, similar to the structure that the U.S. Marine Corps is to the U.S. Navy, for one year before becoming its own independent Branch of the U.S. Military, with representation on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
