Finishing the Last of the Holiday Orders– Cinnamon & Whole Wheat Rolls are Among some of the most Requested Items during the Christmas Season
While working in my grandfather’s Cafe & Bakery, our cinnamon and whole wheat rolls were some of the last of the Holiday Orders that we filled. I still remember getting up at 4 O’clock on Christmas morning and working the dough that we had prepared the night before for the orders we had the next morning. We worked on Christmas Day to ensure the freshness of our products that my grandfather believed was key to a cafe’s existence and reputation.
My grandfather held the belief that he would soon be open and worked on Christmas Day, rather than have his customers serve up day-old-bread. The feature image is of the same cinnamon roll recipe that has been in my family for four generations. These cinnamon rolls shown here I had just taken out of my Hobart Convection Oven and were cooling before I iced them with our Cream Cheese Icing. Our cinnamon rolls with Cream Cheese Icing and a cup of coffee make for a nice start of a day, especially during the holidays.
A Personal Christmas Memory
Mrs. Snodgrass retold this story at my Grandfather’s eulogy. Mrs Snodgrass was an English teacher that taught me in high school and she worked as a broadcaster at the local radio station; so she was very well known as an orator that could dramatically deliver a great story.
I recall a story that my grandfather related to me about getting an order for one-dozen of our cinnamon rolls from Mrs. Snodgrass who wanted them delivered early on Christmas Morning. She specifically asked that I deliver them to the back door at 6 O’clock sharp. We never asked why as, we just asked how many, when, and where to deliver.
I delivered the order to Mrs. Snodgrass in my grandfather’s 1972 red Ford Bronco that I loved driving. I knocked on the back door, as Mrs. Snodgrass had instructed me to do, and handed Mrs. Snodgrass her order of freshly baked cinnamon rolls. She was always a great tipper, and she handed me a five-dollar bill for the early morning delivery.
As I was pulling out of the driveway, her grandson, Oscar noticed the red Bronco pulling out of their driveway. Nothing was significant about Oscar seeing me pulling out until their morning breakfast when everyone at the table of Mrs. Snodgrass was commenting on the cinnamon rolls and how Mrs. Snodgrass must have gotten up early to fix fresh cinnamon rolls.
Mrs. Snodgrass was right in the middle of explaining to her guests how she enjoyed baking for the holidays. This was when Oscar made the untimely observation about seeing me in my grandfather’s Bronco pulling out of the driveway earlier that morning. The subject suddenly changed to how wonderful it was to have her family home for the Christmas Holidays.
But really, how can you not notice a classic, like the 1972 red Ford Bronco?

I allow myself to have cinnamon rolls once a year to celebrate with friends during the Holidays, the key is to have such treats early in the morning and on certain days. Like Paul stated- Let your moderation be known unto all men.
