The Specific Preset Wrist Action in the Golf Swing

The major issue that some golfers have using their wrists is that the wrists behave like a universal joint that has several maneuvers. To be specific, the wrists have six (6) maneuvers, Three (3) of which are critical in setting, either at the start of the takeaway, which I prefer, or at the Lock Position in the golf swing.

The three maneuvers that the golfer wants to use to preset their wrists is called the Dorsiflex, Pronation, and Radial Deviation, shown in the introduction figure above. This is explained in Section 1.14 of my book, The ESPY Golf Swing Coach and in my Download called: PALMER SYNC-IT GOLF COACH APP, The Wrist Action in the Golf Swing. Each maneuver performs one of the three elements in the ESPY Golf Swing sequence. The preset wrist action in the golf swing sets the following Ergonomic (E) elements, for the right-handed golfer:

  • SYNC– Is performed with the Dorsiflex, using the right Index Knuckle to hinge the right wrist backward, toward the golfer’s right elbow. This was a similar technique that Ken Duke demonstrated on Golf Channel in an interview with Lisa Cornwell. The SYNC, Palmar Flex, maneuver that is for CLUBHEAD SPEED!
  • PRESET– Is performed by the natural Pronation of the left wrist toward the right elbow into the Lock Position. The PRESET, or Pronation, maneuver is for POWER and CONTROL!

NOTE: For the right-handed golfer, their RIGHT side is for CLUBHEAD SPEED and ACCELERATION while their LEFT side is for POWER and CONTROL. Matter of fact, I like to use my left elbow as a guidance system to trace the swing plane back and back down through IMPACT and the follow through.

  • COCK– Is performed by the natural Radial Deviation of the right wrist, when the golfer takes the handle of the club up to the top of their swing. In what I call the Yaw maneuver, an aviation term for a horizontal body (shoulders) rotating about a vertical axis (Spinal axis). The Yaw maneuver produces POWER, the Radial Deviation is for ACCELERATION. The Radial Deviation is what causes the ball to develop loft. Around the green, this is a key component.

What is nice and covenant about THE PALMER D-PRO Golf Technique Coach is it can be performed right where you practice your putting in the garage or training facility as I do. Using a Bunt-type Pitch Drill Wrist Action in the Golf Swing to Improve your Game

If you perform these maneuvers correctly, your wrists should look like the figure below, with the wrists in the lock position figure below:

I produced a YouTube video demonstrating the SYNC/PRESET/YAW maneuver in a pitch shot, which is a very finesse golf shot. Anywhere you putt, you can perform this Bunt-type Pitch Shot, but just use a backstop like I do to catch those wayward shots.

The Bunt-type Pitch Shot is an excellent training technique for several reasons. Three are:

  • That is uses the same maneuvers used in the full golf shot.
  • It develops the muscle memory in the subconscious mind because it requires such finesse, by using the fine motor skills that we depend on for consistency in our golf game.
  • You can develop a baseball batter’s mentality, where you are just focused on the ball and nothing else; NO THINKING required!

An honest observation: You might very well use your conscious mind to practice your golf swing in the backyard or on the practice range, while thinking through each element. But I can guarantee you that once you step foot on the golf course, you will be using your subconscious mind, NO DOUBT!

If you haven’t practiced your golf swing subconsciously, you won’t be able to perform your golf swing on the golf course, regardless of how long you practice a particular technique. This is where the finesse Bunt-Type Pitch Drill is a very effective technique golf drill, because it requires a tremendous amount of finesse and fine-motor skills, a subconscious function.
