Two Timeless Classics of U.S. Aviation, the A-2 Leather Flight Jacket and the Boeing B-75 Stearman Trainer, both Introduced in the Early ’30’s
The Boeing B-75 Stearman Kaydet got its name from the aircraft division of Boeing that developed the bi-winged, two-seater cockpit trainer. Even though it was a bi-wing aircraft and flew at relatively low airspeed, it was known for its rugged durability and became a popular trainer for the pilots in the U.S. Army Air Corps and Navy training for World War II.
Because of the open cockpit aircraft of the Stearman, the A-2 Leather Flight Jacket was an essential flight gear to wear, both on and off duty. The A-2 Leather Flight Jacket made its own statement for those who wore the Jacket. Even after the war, the A-2 Leather Flight Jacket returned home and became a popular motorcycle jacket for guys that took to the open road to transition into civilian life. The Leather Jacket still remains a standard for motorcyclists today.
The A-2 Leather Flight Jacket was developed from the A-1 Leather Flight Jacket that had a button-up front, open cuffs and open waistband-style jacket. The A-2 modifications were due to the 1918 Spanish Flu Pandemic that included the elastic cuff and waistband with a leather front flap over the zipper, shown above. These are still part of the A-2 Leather Flight Jacket that we supply to the U.S. Military.
