The PIG SKIN Sports Page Report On Auburn Football– The 3-R’s of any Successful Collage Sports Program Recruiting, Respect, & Relationships
NOTE: I’m going to stress that we don’t know all the facts, but this is what we do know.
Something we Could Learn from The Auburn Coaching Situation from what we know
Even if you’re a head coach, you’re certainly not the master of your destiny as we have learned from the past. And when you arrive in a new neighborhood, like the SEC, you have to establish strong recruit relationships with respect for the culture that you are coaching. If you weren’t the odds on favorite for the job, your main job has just became developing those relationships and respect for others.
And because you’re behind the 8-ball, doesn’t mean you have to stay there. Your success is dependent on recruiting and develop a deep respect for the culture and going the extra mile to meet others in forming relationships. Being humble goes a long way in developing those long-term relationships and earning the trust of others, especially your recruits and their families. I’m sure the ‘E‘ in TEAM doesn’t stand for EGO!
The Blue Collar True Grit Approach
I would like to use Coach Sam Pittman’s selection by the AD, Hunter Yurachek, as an example of the Blue Collar True Grit Approach to coaching. I realize that Sam Pittman has previous ties to Arkansas and to the SEC. But that didn’t make his selection questionable, especially by sports reporters in Mississippi and Alabama, especially.
I listened to radio shows and was on some of these shows that poked fun of the selection of Coach Sam Pittman. But Coach Sam Pittman’s Blue Collar True Grit humble character knew the importance of Recruiting, Respect and Relationships, especially with the High School Coaches. That represents going the extra MILE! When I heard of Coach Pittman selection, we at Arkansas, finally got a head coach that was a coach and didn’t just talk the part.
If you just follow Coach Pittman’s Twitter, you’ll see a heavy presence of Coach Sam Pittman and his staff getting out with these high school coaches and boosters, in Arkansas First Approach. You can’t help but love Coach Pittman, the Coach and the Man. If he came into a restaurant where just ordinary people like myself were having lunch, he would treat you like an old friend. Why do I know this, because of the 3-R’s, Recruiting, Respect, and the importance ONE, developing relationships. There isn’t another reason why we are on this earth FOR, than the 3-R’s.
One thing I do Know- that Coach Sam Pittman GETS IT, Something that CEO, middle and upper management needs to take note of. You don’t have to know everything about all things, go to the front-lines and asked questions and learn from those that actually do the work and lift the load! I know this is a novel and revolutionary idea, but it works! You know what was one of the first phone calls Coach Sam Pittman made, it was to Coach Barry Odom, a former head coach at Missouri.
Coach Pittman, even mentioned this in an interview on Paul Finebaum Show. Even Paul was skeptical of the hire, until he talked with Coach Pittman. He soon became a believer in the hire after the first phone conversation that Paul Finebaum had with Coach Pittman and has been a fan of Coach Pittman since.
