Our Impact We have on Others People Lives– Never Underestimate the Impact Great/Small that Our Life have on Other People that We Don’t Known
Veterans Please Don’t Discount Your Impact that You Can Have on Others, You Can’t Weight IT
Veterans, this article has you in mind, especially during the Holidays. Please read and don’t disregard the positive impact that you can have and will have on others. You just don’t realize this when trapped behind a closed door that others can help you open and see your impact clearly.
Christmas and New Years are usually a time when we reflect on our lives, but when you do, please do it with a wide angle lens to see the totality of your life and its impact on others. It is more than you think.
It Really is a Wonderful Life
One of the best Holiday movies of all time is the movie It’s a Wonderful Life where Jimmy Stewart, playing George Bailey, found himself a despondent middle aged man when looking over his life’s accomplishments. Some would classify this as a middle-age crises. As a young man, George had dreams of traveling the world, going to college, and becoming an aspiring engineer building bridges, highways, and cities of the future.
Later on in the movie, George got to a point that he thought that his life had been a total failure, because he didn’t think that he had lived up to his dreams. He began to think how useless his life had been as he saw things. The key phrase here was how he saw things. You can’t weigh your life in one minute, one day, or even one month segment of time; but in its totality.
The Domino Effect in One’s Life
The angel, Clarence, granted George an unique gift to see how his life would be like if he had never existed, that George wished for. The reason this was an unique gift was that George was able to see his life in a domino effect. Like when his brother, Harry, died in a sledding accident as a child if George didn’t rescue him and Harry went on to have a positive impact on others during World War II.
Another domino effect was when a druggist, Mr. Gower, was found negligent because Mr. Gower filled the prescription with the wrong medication that would have killed a young child if George didn’t intervene and caught the error.
Without George’s intervention, the lives of others would have been dramatically and adversely changed. Without George’s intervention, a domino effect would have played out in a costly tragic way. The issue George had was that he took his impact on others for granted, like we all can do. Never underestimate the impact that you have on others. Even the smallest and simplest interventions on your part can have a domino effect and change other people’s lives.
One reason that I referenced climbing equipment that we used in our line work is that you don’t think about it and its impact until you actually have to use it and count on it. Than you have a different perspective of life and what it means to you.
All 5- ft 6- inch and 158 Lbs of Me
At our 20th high school class reunion, one of our classmates that wasn’t in my immediate circle of friends came up to me at the reunion and related how I had impacted his life. How, I asked? I didn’t even know that anyone past my immediate circle had interest or was aware or took stock in my life during high school.
What he related to me was how he learned persistence watching me play football. My nickname was Fire Plug. I wasn’t the tallest player on our football team, coming in at 5 ft- 6 inch at 158 LBS. But to compensate for my height, I lifted weights and became like a fire plug running back with a low center of gravity. I learned a lot from sports, that’s when the obstacles are the greatest so are the outcomes, the more determined I was the more ability I developed and confidence in that ability.
This classmate saw me going up against guys taller and heavier by 40LBS. than I was and how I never stop rushing for more yards. I never gave up rushing for those four- yard gains that was my objective. But I have to confess that during warm ups before games, I took the time to look around at the other team players that had numbers in the 50’s range. These were the linebackers that I will have an opportunity to get to know very well that night. Some of those linebackers that I was going up against were 6 ft- 3 inches and about 220 LBS.
What I learned from sports was to never count yourself out of the game, have confidence in your training, be prepare to perform at your best whatever the outcome is, never give up; but more importantly, persevere through obstacles, and finally what our Coach Jones always taught us as players, NEVER LOOK AT THE SCOREBOARD; but just play the game until I tell you to quit! If you do that, you will never disappoint me, whatever the score is.
I Never Thought or Aware that I Would Impacted Others
I never even considered that this classmate during our conversation would relay to me, 20- years later, that when he was thinking about giving up, he thought about the Fire Plug and what advantage and difference that gave him to keep going. Like the song states, by Rodney Atkins and a quote from Sir Winston Churchill- If you Find You’re Going Through Hell, Keep Going.
That was the biggest compliment that I could have ever received from someone else. That conversation reinforced my determination to try to be the difference maker in other people’s lives.
I’m retired from Entergy now after 33- years in 2015 as a Grid Engineer where I worked with linemen. If you want to meet two groups of people with determination despite the odds, reach out to Veterans and utility linemen that fits the bill. Every chance that I have, I return to help out with storm restoration efforts, buckling up the hooks and belt even at age 64. I keep myself in shape just for this opportunity to help others.
Here’s my message to all my readers, especially Veterans- NEVER GIVE UP OR IN, ALWAYS PERSEVERE SOMEONE IS COUNTING ON YOU; and you might not even know it at the time!
