Coach’s Corner: GOLFER’S KEY TARGET MUSCLES- Presetting the Golfer’s Key Muscles to Set the Golf Swing Wrist action, Golf Swing 101

GOLFER’S KEY TARGET MUSCLES- are used to initiate The Critical Swing Path muscle memory in the golf swing. The golfer’s muscle memory is a golf swing technique similar to that of a baseball-style golf swing, while the baseball batter standing in the batter’s box uses the majority of their 640 of muscles, the batter concentrates on a few critical muscle not to overload the mind that causes the batter to start THINKING.

While the baseball-style golf swing offers the golfer a great means to establish their golf mechanics, a different type of glove and bag can help the golfer establish a reliable golf swing technique. The golfer only has to trade in their golf glove and golf bag for a pair of boxing gloves and boxing bag. There are certain muscles that boxers key in on in the process to throw a punch, instead of all the muscle involved in throwing a punch or jab. These are what I refer to as The Critical Swing Path Muscles. The following are the Key Muscles and The Critical Swing Path Muscles in regard to the right-handed golfer:

The Dual Muscle

  1. Right Palmaris Longus Muscle/Tendon
  2. Left Brachio-Radialis Muscle

Boxing Bag Workout to Help Develop The Critical Swing Path, the Golfer’s Muscle Memory

CASPER Workout Program that includes Boxing Bag workout

As part of my CASPER Workout Program, I use a boxing bag workout as part of my normal exercise, I concentrate on two key muscles, Palmaris Longus (or the PALMER) Muscles/Tendon and the Brachio-Radialis (BRACHS) Muscles to initiate my punch or jab. This technique engages the powerful Deltoid, Pectoral and my Lats Muscles, the boxer depends on for boxing. This helps me to consciously focus on two (2) muscles to create muscle memory needed, instead of activating a series of muscles in the human body. The Subconscious part of the brain can handle the other 638 of muscles if the key muscle memory has been established through training. I just need to focus on the key muscles, PALMER and BRACHS Muscles, to initiate the golf swing sequence process.

The subconscious mind works to our advantage by controlling the massive amount of data received and process in The Critical Swing Path, or the muscles memory needed in the golf swing. The golfer don’t have to think about how the deltoid, pectoral, and lat muscles are activated will engage. This is part of the subconscious process, that I reinforce in my CASPER boxing bag workout and from my baseball-style golf swing.

The only technique that I employee is the golf swing wrist action. This golf swing wrist action was a technique illustrated in David Duval’s golf swing during an interview with Charlie Rymer on Golf Channel. Charlie Rymer referred to this golf swing technique using the wrist action as ‘That Wrist Thing‘.

David Duval’s Golf Swing Wrist Action Demonstration on Golf Channel

The David Duval’s golf swing wrist action allows the golfer to preset the wrists and lock the golf club handle onto the correct swing plane before taking the golf club handle to the top of the swing. In the Critical Golf Swing Path, the golfer can use the Key Muscle, PALMER and BRACHS Muscles, to engage the critical swing path muscles.

There are two muscles that have direct contact with the handle of the golf club called The thenars (Hypothenar and thenar), as I refer to in my book, are the strongest and has the most dexterity of all the muscles in the hand or wrist that has direct contact with the handle of the golf club. So I would recommend the golfer direct their attention to the muscles that can control the Thenars.

It is important to the golfer to orientate how the Thenars relate to the golf club where the golfer can rely on permanent Motor Skills they developed playing baseball/softball to provide a mental picture on how to set the Thenars. I’m right-handed so in my case my right Thenar represents the clubface while my left Thenar represents hosel of the clubhead and shaft. Having this type of mental image help me relate my baseball swing to my golf swing.

I did a video, that I have posted below, for a television station that they aired on their Sunday night sports show in June of 2021, during the final day of the US Open. I refer to the technique that I demonstrated below as The Orange Bucket Challenge. If you want to develop an effective practice session that will make it to the golf course intact, use challenges and drills during your practice sessions. This will allow the golfer to train their subconscious mind where 90 percent of the golfer’s motor skills are located. The golfer’s conscious mind determines the WHAT, the golfer’s subconscious mind will determine the HOW!

In my Golf Coaching Sessions I Use a pair of Kickboxing Gloves to Help my Students

A pair of kickboxing gloves shown below shows how the Sync and Preset action of the wrists orientates the kickboxing gloves from the address position into the Lock Position at which point the golfer just takes the handle of the club up to the top of the golf swing as if the golfer is swing a baseball bat. What is amazing about using a pair of kickboxing gloves, is how the the left and right wristbands are stack at the Address Position, but are synced in the Lock Position. See illustration below:

How to Sync the Elbow with the Shoulders Using Boxing Gloves

It is essential that the golfer properly identifies the wrists just below the wristbands on the boxing gloves and the lower forearm to help synchronize and preset the golf swing wrist action. Properly presetting the wristbands allows the golfer to sync the right elbow with the shoulders, the basis of The GOLFER’S BRACHS-PALMER Technique. The advantage of this setup is it synchs the golf club handle with the forearms. I think about synchronizing the top of the left and right wristbands to sync the right elbow with my shoulders. This preset of the wristbands using the PALMER and BRACHS Muscle Memory acts as trigger Muscles, Thenars, BRACHS, and PALMER Muscles. This provides a golfer with an advantage of muscle memory keying in on Thenars to produce power, speed, and control for a consistent golf swing. This is a very simple golf swing technique to improve your golf swing.

The ESPY Golf Swing Technique- Same Technique Used in the Baseball-style Golf Swing for Golf Swing 101

Probably one of the most familiar athletic maneuvers that most of us learned at a young age is the baseball swing. The golf swing is not that much different from the baseball-style swing. One big advantage with using the baseball-style golf swing is the batter in the batter’s box is in a proactive position as oppose to a static position in the address position in typical golf swing. The static position freezes the golfer’s mind and causes the golf to start THINKING! Thinking ruins a great golf swing and shot.

If you refer to the batter in the figure below, you will notice the batter is in a focus Progression mode instead of a thinking mode. Thinking was summed up by Yogi Berra’s quote about baseball that can be applied to golf swing, as well, How can you think and hit at the same time?

The answer is obvious- The batter CAN’T think and hit at the same time. Same applies to the golf swing. Presetting the golf swing wrist action allows the golfer to start the muscle memory using the key muscle the Pronator Quadratus Muscle and proceed to a more proactive golf swing, instead of a static golf swing.

I also do not overlook the lower forearms during my CASPER workout. That is where the punching bag, ad wheel and stocking the shelves workouts contributes to the strengthening and effectiveness of my lower forearms, wristbands. The ESPY Golf Swing Coach provides the golfer with a great golf swing sequence.

A Recommendation for your Golf Game:

I would like to recommend an interesting radio program that I regularly listen to from my home state Arkansas on my I-Heart Radio app on KARN 102.9 FM station, out of Little Rock, AR. They air a golf show called Arkansas Fairways and Greens, at 7:00 AM CT each Saturday morning, hosted by Bob Steel, and co-hosted by Jay Fox and Charles Crowson. Bob occasionally as has his guess Alex Myers with Golf Digest and Ron Sirak with Golf Channel. I was interviewed on his show about my book, The ESPY Golf Swing Coach. This show is worth tuning into for golf news and information.

Jay Fox is an Administrator with Arkansas State Golf Association that discuss amateur golf and rules of the game.
