Golf Swing Coaching- Medicine Ball Exercises for the Golfer to Improve Distance, Control, and Consistency from Tee-to-Green for Lower Scores
Golfers who want to improve their golf game have to develop a fitness regimen, especially with a medicine ball, because of the type and range of motion. Some of the best fitness exercises are the ones that mimic the actual golf swing. The exercise elements in my CASPER Fitness Program do not just strengthen the muscles, but, more importantly, can strengthen the muscle memory that is essential for training the golfer’s subconscious mind.
The more cross-training the athlete or, in this case, the golfer has, the better access the golfer has to 90 percent of their natural capabilities on the golf course. I interviewed a high school football coach and AD from Madison Central High School who was so adamant about athlete’s participating in multiple sports that in our interview Coach Bobby Hall said- That he would fire one of his coaches that told a student to specialize in one sport.
Golf is no different than any other sport, and that’s why both in my website and email address I have the abbreviation app. APP stands for Apperception, which is the ability for an athlete to take skills from one sport and transfer them directly into another sport, like the baseball-type swing to the golf swing. The significance of using apperception from the baseball swing is that most of us have picked up a baseball bat before we did a golf club, before the age of 10. The age 10 is significant because before the age of 10 are when fine motor skills are set permanent. No second chances for reset here!
The Medicine Ball Exercises for Golf- Palmer Technique
In the YouTube Video above, I’m using a medicine ball exercise for a golf workout called the Diagonal Woodchopper with a twist called the Palmer Technique because of the Palmer muscle that works and presets my wrists and elbows. This muscle is called the Palmaris Longus Muscle/Tendon. This muscle/tendon that I call the Palmer Technique is the missing link in your golf swing. Believe me it is! Go to Google and put in Palmaris Longus Tendon. This tendon is visible in most people, see Figure Below:
In addition to presetting the wrists and elbows, this tendon is also responsible for gripping the handle of the golf club, and this should peak any golfer’s interest. This Palmer Technique not only presets the golfer’s wrists, but their elbows also. This technique was so important that Arnold Palmer gave this technique to President Eisenhower before a Pro-Am.
In the YouTube Video above, I describe how my right elbow syncs/locks to my right side and my left elbow points to my target area. The left elbow is just as important as the golfer’s right elbow being tucked-in to the golfer’s right side. (The right-handed golfer), The golfer’s left elbow functions as the guidance system for the golf swing and is the turbocharger for accuracy and distance.
