How Weather played an Important Role in One of the Biggest Military Offensive During World War II by Grounding Allied Air Supremacy.
The 75th Anniversary of The Battle of the Bugle on December 16, 1944.
Today marks the 75th Anniversary (16Dec1944) of one of the biggest assaults in World War II, when Hitler launched an offensive campaign. Just to give some relevance to this offensive maneuver by Hitler and his General Staff into today’s reader frame of reference, this would be similar to a hail Mary in Football to turn the War back into the Germans favor, but with a lot of lost of life on both sides.
The Allies (United States, Great Britain, France, Poland and Canada) had made significant foothold in liberating Western Europe after the D-Day Invasion (06Jun1944). The Allies took a brief pause, due to the inclement weather, to regroup before the final push into Germany over the Rhine River. These gains were made possible with the dominant air-power of the Allies, specifically the C-47 Transport, Spitfire, and the new P-51 Mustang, shown below.
Starting on 16Dec1944, weather played a major part in the Germans planning for their offensive. What usually occurs during the winter months even here in the States is low- level clouds and fog forming. This grounded all air support that the Allies relied on to counter one of German’s feared weapons, the Tiger Tank, shown below.
Just the sound and trembling earth beneath the feet of an infantryman would cause fear and terror, even in the most-seasoned solider. Just to give you a sense of the impact of a Tiger Tank, I had an uncle who accompanied me and my wife to see Saving Private Ryan, and the part where Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, and Tom Sizemore confronted a Tiger Tank sent my Uncle into sweats with his hands and forearms trembling like he was in shock, right there in his seat in the theater. Even after a half-of-a-century (54- yrs. when Saving Private Ryan was released) these memories are just as real as if they occurred yesterday to these World War II Veterans.
If you’ve ever watched the movie Patton, you see where General Patton, played by George C. Scott, even solicited the help of a Chaplain to pray for clear weather to mount a defensive attack to reinforce the Allied defenders in Bastion. On 24Dec1944, the Allies’ prayers were answered where air-power could assist in launching aerial counter-attacks and resupply the units fighting along the Bulge.
With the weather that brought some of the coldest and overcast conditions in a century, this removed one of the Allies major advantage of the war, air supremacy for aerial attack and supplying forward units. The C-47, shown below was one of the major factors of the Allies winning the war.
The German’s ultimate objective was to split the Allied forces and spearhead toward Antwerp to capture the harbor where much-needed supplies was shipped in, especially gasoline since both Sherman and Tiger Tanks operated on gasoline instead of Diesel engines.
The Cost of Freedom and Liberty by The Greatest Generation
The Battle of the Bugle became the third deadliest and bloodiest battle in American History, involving 610,000 Allied Troops where 19,000 were killed in Action. The Germans contingent involved 410,000 troops and 1,400 Tiger Tanks, and between 63,222 to 98,000 Germans were killed in action.
Even with this offensive launched by Hitler in the Ardennes in December 16, 1944 and the fearless battle to counter the offensive, General Eisenhower (Ike) believed this was the act of desperation that would leave Germany less likely to continue the war past 1945.

If you want to see a stark contrast between a Democracy, Capitalism and Communism, based on Socialism, you don’t even have to go back 75 years; you only have to look at Poland in 10Nov1980. Read about the brave anti-Socialism in Poland lead by Lech Walesa supported also by Pope Paul and the United States. Poland went from one of the poorest countries in Europe to one of the most successful in just 25-years. Their Economy is booming thanks to the party lead by Lech Walesa, a brave man that faced down Socialism and won.
Lech Walesa story and the history that documented the Polish over throw of Socialism should be taught and debated in every classroom in America to educate the young people on the dangers of Socialism.
We as American should oppose with every effort by our Socialist Friends on the left and the Mainstream Media political efforts in trying to pull us in the Socialist direction. You can’t have Socialism without Totalitarianism that equals enslavement. When ever you see people trying to suppress Freedom of Speech and the Freedom of the Press to accurately report the facts to encourage public respectful debate be on ALERT, this is pure Socialism.
The Government must have Totalitarianism in order to have Socialism, the government must have the ability by force to take revenue from people that work hard and invest in order to give it to those that don’t see the need to work for what they have or what they want. The other negative affect of Socialism is lack of production and little to no incentive to make breakthrough in Science and Technology.
