The Basis for the Indiana Jones Jacket– The Leather Flight Jacket worn by our WWII Pilots was the Inspiration for the Indiana Jones Jacket
One of the features that made Indiana Jones the charismatic, legendary archeologist character was a leather jacket, khaki pants, and his fedora, while in search of antiquities in jungles and deserts around the world. This leather jacket and fedora were his trademarks and were synonymous with Indy’s character that inspired a series of action-packed movies that captivated audiences for the past forty years, since 1981. Even now, every time one of the Indiana Jones movies are aired, I’m watching it with the same intrigue that I had the first time, these are classics.
George Lucas that brought us STAR WARS collaborated with Steven Spielberg to create the Indiana Jones character, set in the 1940’s by no coincidence for a historical reference. Indy’s iconic persona was reflected in the most historical period of world history, the prelude to World War II. George Lucas and Steven Spielberg recreated the perception of that period in a jacket and fedora for their character, Indiana Jones. The perception of Indy’s jacket was based on the 1931 A-2 Leather Flight Jacket, worn by pilots and the elite units of the 82nd and 101st Airborne during World War II.
The A-2 Leather Flight Jacket that formed the basis of the Indy-Style Jacket with khaki pants and shirt encapsulated the theatrical role of one of the most famous archeologists since Howard Carter that discovered King Tutankhamen’s tomb. But what made Indiana Jones the adventure and drama film that captivated audiences for four decades was entanglement in international espionage of cloak-and-dagger exploits that Indy encountered.
The Indiana Jones-style leather jacket proved to be every bit the steel of Excalibur that endured cliffhangers encountered by Indiana Jones that are immortalized by its predecessor, the A-2 Leather Flight Jacket. The A-2 Leather Flight Jacket held up to aerial combat missions, bomber escorts, and dog fighting in the cockpit of the P-40 Warhawk and P-51 Mustang fighters, including the B-17, B-24, B-25, and later, the B-29 Bombers. It was also worn by the famous Tuskegee Airmen (The Red Tails). A Trivia Information, Tom Selleck was the first actor chosen to play Indiana Jones’ character, but was unable to do so due to his work playing Magnum PI in the CBS TV series. Thus, the role went to Harrison Ford and the rest is history.
