Clear and Present Opportunity Missed– The Church Missed a Grand Opportunity to Influence Our Nation’s Moral Compass for Decades to Come
The Pandemic was a mixed blessing, because with the school shutdown and with remote learning, it gave parents an opportunity to review the objectionable curriculum that some schools were teaching. It got parents involved in their kids’ learning, or lack thereof. That goes to show us that every obstacle comes with an opportunity. Same with the 1963 Supreme Court Ruling.
The First Amendment of the Bill of Rights
The Supreme Court’s Ruling was based on the First Amendment- Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
This First Amendment is at the bedrock of our Life, Liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness.
We are all too aware of how our public education is in a crisis of not preparing our kids to have a bright future and careers for a successful life. But this could have been avoided in 1963, when the Supreme Court Ruled that public schools couldn’t establish or endorse a religious doctrine that public schools had to be neutral on matters of Religion, Faith, or belief. That meant that the public school could no longer institute or support an organized religion.
Churches didn’t assess the biggest opportunity that they had, the free exercise of one’s faith or belief in education institutions. Most Churches focus more on the restriction in the 1963 Supreme Court’s decision based on the First Amendment and not on free exercises of the Church’s faith or belief.
There was nothing that prohibited churches from competing with public schools in offering their communities a moral and faith-based education, even for special needs students. If the government is offering families subsidies to purchase electric vehicles, then the government should offer vouchers for families to go to the school of their choice. You don’t complain about your competition efforts; you outperform them. That’s how customers have a better product or service, with competition.
The Clear and Present Opportunity Missed
This was the Clear and Present Opportunity Missed by the Church of not providing an alternative-based education. Despite the differences that exist in various denominational beliefs, churches missed a grand opportunity to band together as a cooperative for K-12 education in areas where they served.
Right now it still remains a grand opportunity for various denominations to put aside their various beliefs and serve the good of their community and our Nation. But back in 1963, Churches had the opportunity to avoid the various crises that exist in our Nation today by improving literacy, and teaching the basics of science, math, reading, geography, history, and having organized sports to develop healthy generations.
Every Parent Wants the Best for their Kids
Every parent, regardless of race, economics, or faith, wants the best education for their kids that only exists in a few areas today. This would put the focus on the students and not on powerful teacher unions that put union needs and beliefs over that of the students. There would be no telling that the positive influence the Church could have at the grassroots level, with alternative schools in their communities. This would make for better public schools and avoid the problems that some public school districts have.
Churches are always trying to assess how best to improve the lives of people in their communities with services that they could provide. Establishing alternative schools in their community could have immeasurable, positive impact on their communities. The Church could have an incalculable influence on shaping and developing the moral compass in young people’s lives and even strengthen the family unit that has been under attack since 1963.
It isn’t about Investing in Building Programs, but Investing in Lives
Churches choose to invest in buildings, instead of lives, with educational opportunities. Alternative schools not only invest in people’s lives both for students and parents, but for teachers providing a stable, safe environment and support. It is estimated that 2 million students have left the public school system for alternative educational options. That estimate could be triple or quadruple, if parents had an alternative school option where they could have a voice and state in their child’s education.
And now since parents can receive funding for students to attend alternative schools, this is a huge option for Churches to step up to the plate. But the real benefit is that it would make public schools perform at a higher level, because of competition.
Several generations of students have missed out on having an alternative option for the best education possible; but it isn’t too late for Churches to redirect their attention from building programs to form a cooperative for alternative schools that can serve their community better and avoid the crises we are seeing now ■
