My US WINGS® Leather Jacket, a Line Patrolman’s Consistent Companion
I have traded in my high line patrol and engineering duties for a more casual lifestyle on the farm and taking the road less traveled in all of God’s nature. After all my chores are done and I’m not on the golf course, I take the opportunity and carry just the essentials: riding my Harley-Davidson, with my US WINGS Leather Jacket and gloves, a thermos of coffee, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, with my camera. I just take to the Open Road less traveled.
Instead of listening to the thumping rotor blades of a 206 Bell Jet Ranger, I just listen to a 1,600 cc 2-Cycle engine that echoes through the valley to the old shack on my farm. Time has long ago left old wooden building to the old man time, but it still remains one of my favorites places to go to and just meditate. Also a great place to have a cup of hot coffee and a peanut butter sandwich with an ole dear friend and just reflect on a different life once lived at a faster pace.
I’m 61 years old, and I spent 33 of those years, as what I call a Wichita Lineman, of patrolling lines, maintaining, and restoring them. I have a few tangible memories of that time. My old Leather Flight Jacket was an item I grabbed with my cap and sunglasses before heading out to work, night or weekends. I flew line patrol in a Bell 206-D Jet Ranger during this same time of year of fall, preparing for the winter months and ice storms.
I actually felt like I actual lived the song by Glen Campbell, entitled the Wichita Lineman, a former Arkansan. Glen Campbell sang the Wichita Lineman with the stanza of still on the line. There was one constant in my routine: grabbing my cap, sunglasses, and my US WINGS Leather Jacket. Now instead of flying line patrol and driving country roads, I just wear my US WINGS Leather Jacket to drive the simple back roads.
