The Lag Action in the Wrist- LAWS of the Golf Swing Coach

Creating proper Lag Action in the Wrist Sequence is a great golf coaching technique that the golfer can use for consistency and power. Creating the proper lag action in the wrist in your golf swing isn’t that difficult or impossible to accomplish as one might think. You don’t have to be a professional or a scratch golfer to learn how to develop lag action in the wrist sequence, if you know how to develop and maintain the proper wrist preset in the golf swing by syncing and presetting. I refer to this as the LAWS of the golf swing coach technique.

Like many golfer can attest to, the golfer has to learn to play golf between the ears, like Bobby Jones stated. Between the golfer’s ears is where your best golf swing coach resides. The two things the golfer needs to do to develop lag action in the wrist, LAWS of the golf swing coach, are to develop the drop technique from the top and the target for the release point. The drop technique was discussed between Brad Faxon and Curtis Strange at the 2017 U.S. Open, about how Sergio Garcia starts his downswing- like pulling down on a rope. This was exactly how I explained the start of the downswing in Section 1.15 in my book, The ESPY Golf Swing Coach:

SECTION 1.15 The Drop Technique

1.15     After the completion of the Yaw element, there is a short pause to shift the gears. This pause is similar to a Jeep backing up, in reverse gear, in Figure 1-12, then the driver pausing to shift the gear selector into first gear to go forward. A great muscle memory to start the downswing is to think about gradually dropping a sledgehammer handle toward the ball, or pulling down on a rope.

The target for the release point for the lag action in the wrist is at the golfer’s lead front pocket. Don’t think about or focus on the ball being at ground level, but instead re-orientate the golf ball to where the golfer’s hand would be when the hands reach the lead front pocket as noted in the illustration below. If you use these two techniques in your golf swing coach process, you will develop the Lag Action in the Wrist Sequence, or LAWS of Golf. You will start hitting better tee shots and, more importantly, the critical approach shot into the green.

If you want to make a significant improvement in your golf score and lower your handicap, focus on your approach shot skills. This will reduce your score around the green.

Create Lag Action by Re-Orientation

The Lag Action in the Wrist Sequence was used by two of the best golf swing coaches I know and one golfer that I had the opportunity to interview in 2002. All three of these men used a lag action in the wrists technique and the re-orientated in the golf ball. One golf swing coach was Eddie Merrins that produce a video series entitled, Swing The Handle, not the Club. Eddie’s referenced swing the handle, but in reality he was re-orientating the golf shot from the ground to the handle of the club, but he didn’t go into specifics of this technique on his video series like I would like him to have.

The other golf swing coach was my grandfather, H.Q. Boatright, who taught me the golf swing by referring to the golfer’s wrists and forearms, like a baseball player would swing their bat in a baseball swing. My golf swing coach would focus on the presetting the wrists in the golf swing to produce the lag action in the wrist at the lead front pocket to develop a golf swing with consistency and power.

How to Re-Orientate Your Golf Swing

The rare interview I had was with unique golfer, Colonel George Robert Hall, who was held at the North Vietnam prisoner of war camp, called the Hanoi Hilton, for seven-and-a-half years. He used his love of golf to survive his horrific experience. Six- weeks after his release in February of 1973, he was invited to play in The Greater New Orleans P.O.W. Pro-Am Open, where he shot his handicap of four (4). One question that I asked him was not having access to a golf club or golf ball, how did he mentally play golf in his seven-and-a-half square foot prison cell. He replied, that he re-orientated the golf ball from the ground or, in this case the floor, up to his hands. And he used a stick or his left thumb as the handle of the club handle. What was interesting during my interview, Col. Hall specifically use the term golf club handle, not the golf club.

One technique that a professional golfer focuses on when discussing their golf swing is getting the hands in front of the ball before that creates lag action in the wrist and allows the wrists and forearms release with power. Using the LAWS of the golf swing coach technique, the golfer can easily create the proper lag in the wrist during their golf swing for consistency and power.

There is a great YouTube Video of an interview with David Duval by Charlie Rymer, both of Golf Channel. Charlie Rymer was interviewing David Duval on what Charlie referred to as That Wrist Thing. That wrist thing, as described by Charlie Rymer, allows the golfer to sync the elbow with the shoulders and preset the wrists. This Sync and Preset elements allow the golfer to create lag in the wrist for the power they can count on for tee and approach shots.
