The QATSPY Golf Sports Page: Simple Golf Swing Tips
By: Charles W. Boatright
Classic Golf Swing- More than Just Mechanics and Athletics, but True Grit
Albert Einstein, one of the greatest thinkers, had a great quote about how we can achieve excellence- Excellence is doing a common thing in an uncommon way. Achieving excellence isn’t based on one’s natural talents or abilities, but on one’s perseverance. A great forum for coaching golf focuses on simple golf swing technique of presetting the wrists. Golf is an excellent sport to teaching perseverance, patience and how small things perform correctly has a significant impact on one’s life and their golf game.
Bobby Jones’, one of the greatest golfer, quote stated- Golf is a game that is played on a five-inch course – the distance between your ears. While this might be daunting to some, it gives the common golfer encouragement, because golf like life is more mental than physical aspect. With persistence, patience, and purpose, the common golfer, with average athletic skills or even physical limitation, can enjoy the sport of golf.
Golf is an Excellent Outreach to our Veterans “Operation Dog Tag”
Golf is not only for those seeking an athletic activity, but excellent outreach for our Veterans who are returning from the battle field. I have developed a unique forum for coaching golf called Operation Dog Tag to provide organizations with the ability to use golf to help our Veterans dealing with PTSD. These are listed below, and are FREE for organizations to use. The PGA has been using the benefits of golf to reach out to Veterans returning from service since World War One, in 1917.

If the game of golf teaches anything to us, it teaches the golfer the mental advantages of persistence, patience, and purpose. This approach to the mental game of golf can be best summarized by President Calvin Coolidge:
Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.
I included President Calvin Coolidge statement in my book, The ESPY Golf Swing Coach, that focuses and highlights the importance of persistence, patience, and purpose. These three attributes form what I refer to as the mental horsepower, or true grit in golf a forum for coaching golf. The components of the mental horsepower of golf are described in Sections 5.4 and 5.5 of my book.
Section 5.4-5 True Grit, the Mental Horsepower
If golf teaches two inescapable attributes, these are that the common golfer can learn how to take failure and develop the irreplaceable experience, and use success to build confidence, both on and off the golf course. Golf is a skill that a person can use to enhance their business and personal opportunities.
The following excerpt is from Section 5.4 of my book:
5.4 If education was presented in terms of true grit and sportsmanship, there would be no limit to what a person could accomplish in life. True grit, with sportsmanship, perseverance and integrity provide the mental horsepower. In most organized sports, sportsmanship is included as part of the athlete’s curriculum, especially golf. Sportsmanship includes such characteristics as humility, integrity, commitment, perseverance, respect, honor, honesty, fairness, sacrifice, responsibility, preparation, discipline, trustworthiness, and a hard work ethic, to name a few.
5.5 True grit, with sportsmanship, is easier for most people to grasp and understand. Sportsmanship centers on athletes taking responsibility for their own actions. When athletes take responsibility for their actions, the separation between perception and reality closes. True grit is being able to exhibit the quiet strength of perseverance, self-reliance, confidence, and integrity. Athletes understand that confidence is derived from the quiet strength of an old proverb: In quietness and confidence shall be your strength. Keep in mind that more can be learned from a loss or failure than from a win, especially if the lesson from the loss is used to build confidence and gain experience.
Golf requires the common person to push themselves beyond their comfort ZONE into the Challenger ZONE, the mental game of golf. Yogi Berra had a Yogism referencing the mental game of golf in his reference about baseball- Baseball (or golf, in the case) is 90 percent mental, and the other half is physical.
You’ve got to love Yogi’s Yogism and his math. How can one go beyond a hundred percent of their capabilities? This is where frustration develops the golfer’s determination to develop the golfer’s mental forum for coaching golf. Without frustration and determination, the golfer can’t access the mind’s potential.
I would like to dedicate Operation Dog Tag to Colonel Robert C. Boatright who served his country in World War II, Korea, and the Vietnam Wars.

A Recommendation for your Golf Game:
I would like to recommend an interesting radio program that I regularly listen to from my home state Arkansas on my I-Heart Radio app on KARN 102.9 FM station, out of Little Rock, AR. They air a golf show called Arkansas Fairways and Greens, at 7:00 AM CT each Saturday morning, hosted by Bob Steel, and co-hosted by Jay Fox and Charles Crowson. Bob occasionally as has his guess Alex Myers with Golf Digest and Ron Sirak with Golf Channel. I was interviewed on his show about my book, The ESPY Golf Swing Coach. This show is worth tuning into for golf news and information.
Jay Fox is an Administrator with Arkansas State Golf Association that discuss amateur golf and rules of the game.
