The Yankee Perspective- How 59 Seconds Kick-Started the 20th Century Boom in Industrial Revolution

Nothing can capture the imagination better that started the 20th Century Technology and Industrial Revelation Boom more significantly than aviation. This was not where just two men who just combined wings with an engine to fly for 59 seconds on an isolated beach in North Carolina, at Kill Devil Hills, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on December 17, 1903. It marked the new era of technological and Industrial Revolution achievements that mankind has never witnessed before.

But the real significance of the Wright Brothers flight was that within a short period of seven years on October 11, 1910, an aircraft based on the Wright Brother’s design would fly the President of the United States. For the first time in history, a President of the United States would take flight for 3-minutes and 20 seconds over a three- mile flight at 60 miles per hour at Kinloch Field in Saint Louis, Missouri.

Naturally, the President was none other than the Rough Rider himself, President Theodore Roosevelt, who accepted Archibald Hoxsey’s offer for a flight, without hesitation. President Theodore Roosevelt embodied the Rough Rider spirit that had a direct connection to the Wright Brothers. Archibald Hoxsey was a pilot at the Wright Brothers flight school in Montgomery, Alabama.

In 1927, the U.S. Military requested a flight jacket be design for their pilots. The A-1 Leather Flight Jacket was developed for aviators, followed later by the updated A-2 Leather Flight Jacket in 1931 that is still used today by the U.S. Military. US WINGS® still issue the A-2 Leather Flight Jacket today to the U.S. Military.
