The Sun’s Rays, a Great Disinfectant for Your Clothes Against the COVID-19. Our Grandmothers Used the Sun for Decades to Dry, Disinfect, and Freshen up Clothes
Some of the younger generations might not know what a clothesline was used for in the years ago up to the early to mid-1960’s. Just like most houses during this period didn’t have central air conditioning or color television, we didn’t even have clothes dryers. While most houses had washing machines, my grandmother didn’t have a clothes dryer until the mid-60’s. Clotheslines were used to hang the Saturday or Monday’s wash out to dry, while she put on a large pot of Pinto Beans to slow cook.
Matter of fact, if you go to some restaurants, especially in New Orleans, the Monday’s special on the menu is Red Beans & Rice. This tradition of putting on a large pot of beans that soaked the night before, gave people time to do the washing, hang up clothes to dry, and in some cases starch & iron shirts like my grandmother did. She was able to do her work and have lunch and dinner ready. One of my best meals even now is Pinto Beans, mixed greens, and cornbread with some ice tea,
I realize when I mention clothesline to some young guys you are thinking about a wrestling or football tackle technique, but that isn’t what this clothesline is.
One thing that you hoped, was that a neighbor wasn’t burning their trash that day that would permeate your clothes with the great smell of smoke. I still hang my blue jeans on the line even today to dry because the drying process puts a starch-like rigidity in my jeans, as if the jeans were starched. And who can beat the great outdoor, fresh scent of the jeans.
I call my blue jeans and Button-Down Oxford shirt with my leather flight jacket look my country-squire look, especially when running errands into town.
