The ARMY-NAVY Game Putting On the Leather– Purchase Your Flight Jacket Worn by U.S. Army Pilots/Airborne & U.S. NAVY/Marine Corps Aviators
Today will be the 123rd meeting of ARMY versus NAVY on the gridiron, playing in one of the oldest rivalries in College Football. We don’t want to leave AIR FORCE or SPACE FORCE out, because they used to be attached to the ARMY as the ARMY AIR CORPS until September 1947. SPACE FORCE will be attached to the U.S. AIR FORCE until a later date, until they become a separate branch. ARMY considers both AIR FORCE & SPACE FORCE as brothers even today.
Just recently, this has become a very competitive football game on the college level of competition. Obviously, we all have our favorite teams that we are pulling for during these 60- minutes of Football exhibition, but like in the first TOP GUN Movie, where Tom Skerritt playing (Commander Mike Metcalf) call sign VIPER stated in the briefing room– Just remember when it’s all over out there, we’re all on the same team.
Since I was in the ARMY, I will be pulling for ARMY, especially with their modified Wish-Bone Offense that they run. I like seeing the Wish-Bone executed in College Football that hearkens back to Emory Bellard and Barry Switzer days under Texas Longhorns Head Coach Darrell Royal who introduced the Wish-Bone Offense. Arkansas had to face Texas, like in the 1969 Game of the Century during the old SWC days where they ran the Wish-Bone Offense to perfection. To me it is a more exciting offense, even than the RPO that is executed now.
Even the Alabama Head Coach Bear Bryant Traveled to Austin, Texas to be schooled on the running of the Wish Bone Offense that Texas was running. I still enjoy seeing replays of these games where offenses ran the Wish-Bone. I realize that the Quarterback can’t afford to be subject to getting hit in the Wish-Bone Offense, because there is a defensive player that is assigned to cover the Quarterback, or in other words, to be a hit man.
Army has a 5 & 6 record, taking on NAVY with a 4 & 7 record during the 2022 season. But the overall ARMY-NAVY Game favors NAVY slightly, with a record of NAVY- 63 to ARMY- 52, with 7 Ties. While these players are fearless competitors for 60- minutes on the gridiron today (10Dec2022) starting at *15:00 hrs (3:00 p.m.) EST, all six branches of services love our country that we took an oath to serve and protect under the U.S. Constitution. With this oath that we took, we are bound by our honor, even after we leave our service with the U.S. Military.
* 20:00 Hrs (8:00 p.m.) ZULU TIME
Whoever wins the battle on the gridiron today, these men and women will join hands and ranks to protect those that these men and women took an oath to serve and protect. The performance on the gridiron pales in comparison to the performance these soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen have been trained for in the defense of our great country. GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES of AMERICA!
My Postgame Analysis of the 2022 ARMY-NAVY Game:
The game between ARMY and NAVY was a total ground game with no completed passes during the four Quarters of play. The only pass that was completed was by ARMY that was called back, due to a holding penalty by ARMY’s Offensive line. NAVY completed a pass, but it was during the first Overtime for a NAVY Touchdown.
There were two premature snaps made by ARMY in the RED ZONE during the fourth quarter that the Quarterback couldn’t handle and this took ARMY out of scoring position or even a field goal attempt to win the game. The Center snapped the ball on a false clap that caused the football to be snapped to an unsuspecting Quarterback twice in consecutive plays. Going under center inside the RED ZONE is a great option where there is significantly more crowd noise that would allow the Quarterback and Center to communicate, where the snap signal from the Quarterback can be detected by the Center.
ARMY, during the first Overtime period, allowed the NAVY receiver to run past the Outside Linebacker into an area where there was no over-the-top coverage assistance from an ARMY Safety. The Outside Linebacker had to cover a run option by NAVY, which prevented ARMY’s Linebacker from covering the NAVY receiver and instead provided a run prevent defense.
Safeties can’t allow receivers to get down field and get behind them without providing tight coverage. Safeties have to be within touching distance of down receivers. I call it hands-on coverage by Safeties. It is obvious that the Linebackers can’t provide down field coverage and provide run prevent defense as well; safeties have to pick up downfield coverage.
One thing that was impressive in the ARMY-NAVY Games was the blocking, even down field by both teams. This significantly helped the running game for both ARMY and NAVY. The blocking was textbook.
When I wrote in the above article on the ARMY-NAVY Game, I expressed that this game has been more competitive, and this was an understatement on my part. The first Overtime Game that ended up in double Overtime surpassed my expectations and delivered football fans a highly competitive game.
I would like to thank players and coaching staff for both ARMY and NAVY teams for their level of play and sportsmanship that they displayed. May God protect you both in the service of our country.
