01Baseball&GolfSwingMech Series No. 3 of 4

Many people have bought weighted golf clubs for training, but using the wrong weighted club and concept of the overload/underload technique can be detrimental to your golf game http://goo.gl/eOmGku. The proper weight range for the golfers to use is a club that does not exceed the 20 percent overload factor. If the golfer uses a training club that is heavier than the 20 percent overload factor, this type of training club will interfere with the correct swing mechanics. Using the proper weighted golf baton (as illustrated in the diagram) can actually add 10 to 12 percent faster club-head speed to increase the golfer’s SMASH FACTOR (Ball speed/club-head speed)!

What the golfer will realize using the overload/underload golf baton practice is the short amount of time needed to see improvements in their golf swing mechanics to produce the critical club-head speed. This is from just using the golf baton for approximately six times per day, for about 10 minutes each period. The golfer using just three sequential (Synch, Protract, and Yaw) elements with the golf baton will gain valuable practice time.

This will provide the golfer with approximately 365 man-hours of training time each year. In Malcolm Gladwell’s book, Outliers, it takes approximately 10,000 man-hours of practice, training, and work to become an expert or, in this case, a professional golfer. What is a more reasonable goal for most golfers, where golf is their passion and not their profession, is 7,000 man-hours to become a single-digit handicapper.

Nothing replaces the experiences a golfer receives from actually playing golf on the course. This is the proven ground for your golf practice. But if you work in another profession other than being a professional golfer, 365 man-hours is almost more time than the average golfer plays golf per year.

There are five advantages that the average golfer can gain just by using The ESPY Golf Swing Coach to obtain the 7,000 man-hours, needed for single-digit handicap status.

The ESPY Golf Swing Book

FIRST– The golfer who has played baseball at some point, and at some level of competition, can utilize the batting mechanics from their baseball swing to crossover into the golf swing. The ESPY Golf Swing Coach takes the baseball swing mechanics from the batter’s box to the tee box. This can account for an estimated 468 man-hours per year for nine years (from age 9 – 18), that can equal about 4,212 man-hours total.

SECOND– The golf baton practice time is equivalent to 365 man-hours per year.

THIRD– In my book, there is a scrimmage-type golf practice that I refer to as The 405 Training Drill. If the golfer can practice The 405 Training Drill for 40 weeks out of the year in their backyard, that would be equivalent to 240 man-hours per year.

FOURTH– Working the golfer’s mental game of reading and mental exercises for about one-and-a-quarter (1.25) hours per day by studying and focusing on being in THE ZONE, is equivalent to 465 man-hours. (Remember Colonel Hall’s mental practice refer to this link http://goo.gl/W1jAuC.)

FIFTH– Actually playing golf for 40 weeks per year, twice a week, for 230 man-hours per week.

NOW THE MATH:

Single-digit handicap status………………………7,000 Man-hours

Baseball crossover mechanics…………………..4,212 Man-hours

Required golf practice/play………………………..2,788 Man-hours

Practice/playing hours per year………………….1,300 Man-hours

With this training schedule, it would take the average golfer about 2.14 years to become a single-digit handicapper using The ESPY Golf Swing Coach approach.

As a closing note, to realize improvement in your mental and physical game, the golfer must overstress the body and mind beyond the normal levels. This is why the overload/underload method is important to the golfer. The golfer’s mind and body are like a rubber band; once they are stretched beyond the elastic limit, they will never return to their original size. The same holds true in golf practice to improve the mind, body, and soul you have to work them pass what you did yesterday.
