The 76th Recognition of the Longest Day, June 6th, restoring Life, Liberty, and Freedom to the World, marked by the word Excalibur.
Excalibur was the sword described in the novel by Sir Thomas Malory entitled King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. The Excalibur was made from the finest metal known to man that King Arthur pulled from a rock that gave him powers and ability to establish England, ruled by justice and liberty. Excalibur is used today to describe the moral character of a person. I would assign the term Excalibur to the Greatest Generation.
There were many amphibious landings that took place during World War II in Africa, Europe, and the Pacific Theaters of War. D-Day was the largest amphibious landing in history, consisting of 156,000 men from America, Britain, Scotland, Ireland, Canada, France, Australia, Czechoslovakia, Poland, and New Zealand.
General Eisenhower’s Decision Concerning D-Day
General Eisenhower, Supreme Allied Commander, led the planning and execution of D-Day. Experts estimated that the causalities rate would be somewhere between 10 to 30 percent, that 46,000 men were be killed, hitting the beaches of Normandy on the first day. That would be a daunting decision that one man would have to make. The actual causalities were 4,414, that was 2.83 percent, a far cry from the 20% estimates.
These men from these 10- countries defeated the Nazis that terrorized an entire World with mass murder and the death of millions, due to their nationality or their religion, and other abhorrent criteria the Nazis considered not among the Master Race. It wasn’t until the Allied soldiers got to the death camps in early spring of 1945 that they realized what they were actually fighting against.

Just to realize the lasting effects of the D-Day Invasion, my wife and I took my uncle to see the movie Saving Private Ryan, and right from the opening scene of the Rangers hitting Omaha Beach, my uncle started sweating and his hands shook. Four thousand, four hundred and fourteen men died and gave up their future, so that we could have a future. It’s up to us to make sure that their sacrifice was worth it. Let’s make the best of their sacrifice, and have a better nation and World to live in.
