PP&E for Your Virtual School Learning at Home, Developing Your Natural Auto/APP Skills for Retention of Learning Online Virtual Education
Auto/APP are not two I-Phone applications, but actually stand for Autodidact and Apperception. Autodidact is the ability of Auto, meaning self, and the word didact comes from the Greek word for the ability to teach; or being Self-taught. One of the most famous Autodidacts was President Abraham Lincoln, the father of the Republican Party.
Not only did President Abraham Lincoln educate himself, but he also taught himself the law and became a great debater and auditor. I have read several of President Abraham Lincoln’s speeches and they are for the ages; especially The Gettysburg Address, that took a little over two minutes to present. And surprisingly, President Lincoln wasn’t the keynote speaker.
Because I was in the military and later worked in bridge construction after my service, I worked in various states, so I had to complete my college education by distance learning. I don’t mean online distance learning, but correspondence learning, snail mail, and textbooks. PC’s wouldn’t be used in education for another eight years.
What I would like to share with those having to virtual learn is to focus on your PP&E. I’m not referring to masks and gloves, even though they are important, but I’m referring to the following:
Get Prepared
Get Prepared– Set up a schedule, a specific work area, and time to study with no distractions, and have specific goals for each hour. Set up a six-hour study period with 15-minute breaks out of each hour. Just like there are Circadian Rhythms in sleeping and eating, there are Circadian Rhythms in studying. The subconscious mind continues processing information, even while we are sleeping. This is one reason why the more you practice a task, the better you get at that task.
A key to preparation is organization and discipline. Break everything down into the simplest elements, then organize those elements into a sequence. This is why sports are important in childhood development. The child has to break activities down into elements that they can practice in a sequence and develop a procedure.
If you want to become a good reader, become a great listener. This is why reading to your kids is important to their learning for childhood development.
Be Persistent
Be Persistent– Never give up, if you don’t understand something the first time. The harder something is to understand, the more important it is to you. One of the keys to effective reading and learning is to glance over the entire chapter the first time before you read the first and last sentences of each paragraph on the second read. The third time, read the entire chapter. This is similar to watching a movie the second time, but, in reality, it is an effective way to learn.
One reason for watching a movie the second time is that you start studying the plot leading up to the climax of the movie you already know. You start to see how plots are fixed together. This is why the second and third time you see a movie, you actually enjoy the movie more and see things you missed the first showing.
But in actuality, this scan, highlighting, and deep dive reading is an effective means to not only read, but retain what you have read for higher and intense comprehension. Comprehension is key to not only learning, but understanding, and the next level to education, which is the third level, is understanding and application!
Expect Excellence
Expect Excellence– The subconscious will fulfill expectations as you become familiar with the subject matter. Be persistent in achieving expectations and Excellence. Excellence isn’t about getting it right the first, second, or even the tenth time. Excellence is about gaining experience through failures and confidence through success to actually perform under actual conditions.
Failure provides the student with determination to determine what not to do the next time and learn to never give up on achieving your goal. One big help that textbook publishers could do in education is to supply the answers to problems in the back of the book, then allow the student to perform the work leading up to the answer.
In golf, when you make a bad swing, it doesn’t take you long to figure out that you did something wrong. HOW and WHY you perform the elements in the golf swing are always more important than the actual golf shot, which is the WHAT.
When you attend a PGA Tournament, it is easy to see the WHAT (in terms of a great golf shot), the game these professionals have, but the much bigger question to figure out is HOW and WHY. Now you realize that the WHAT is just the start of your education, so now you can pursue HOW and WHY since you are virtually learning.
By the way, I completed a Degree in Engineering and picked up some Vo-Tech Training on the way.
