THE QATSPY GOLFER

By: Charles W. Boatright

The golf swing sequence is govern by one of Coach John Wooden’s coaching principle

Some of the smallest factors have the biggest impacts in golf. The golf swing sequence is govern by one of Coach John Wooden’s coaching principle No. 1- Success Is All About the Little Things. Some of the greatest impacts in golf are some of the smallest maneuvers that are obscured in the typical golf lessons and techniques. Golf is a game measured in millimeters and fraction of degrees that determines the golfer’s ability to develop power and speed with control. The golfer has to focus on two minor elements to improve their golf swing sequence and game. The wrists are the missing links between a consistent golf shot for par or birdie and an errant golf shot resulting in a frustrating bogey or worst. The wrists are the most important key in the golfer’s swing sequence and practice.

It is first essential that the golfer understands where their wrists are located. The wrist aren’t located where one would wear a wristwatch or bracket, for this is the golfer’s lower forearms, or wristbands on the boxing glove, shown above. The wrists are just below the wristbands on the boxing gloves. The wrist are made up of two of the strongest and most dexterous muscles that have direct contact with the handle of the golf club. This was one reason Eddie Merrins, The Little Pro, developed a video series entitles Swing the Handle, not the Club.

The Sync/Preset JUCO Technique of the wrists is the most important maneuver the golfer performs in their golf swing sequence for Power & Speed. If the golfer was limited to one technique to focus on during their practice time, it would be the Sync/Preset the wrists maneuver to improve the golfer’s distance and control.

Syncing/Presetting the Golf Swing Sequence, the Most Important Golf Swing Coaching Technique in the Golfer’s Lesson

Presting The Wris2t I can’t tell you the number of occasions when I had an opportunity to discuss the golf swing sequence with both golf instructor or golf coach centered on how they instruct their students on initiating their golf swing. Most, if not all of them, respond by stating, “Just take the club back with your forearms and shoulders.” I then ask, “How do you incorporate the arms, forearms, and wrists with that movement?”

They usually look puzzled at my question, as if what is the difference.” In anatomy, there is a great amount of distinction drawn between the arm (from shoulder to the elbow), forearm (elbow to the top of the wrist), and wrists between the forearm and hand. The wrists are one of the most articulating components of the human body and desire additional attention in the golf swing sequence.

The wrist and lower forearm has six maneuvers consisting of- Supination, Pronation, Dorsiflexion, Palmar Flexion, Radial and Ulna Deviation, shown below. Four of these maneuvers are essential in the golfer’s swing sequence to provide horizontal force and speed. Speed is increased by the Radial and Ulna Deviation maneuvers. Reason is that Radial and Ulna Deviation adds the speed component is the amount of vertical spin imparted to the golf ball going up the clubface. This is the reason professional golfers want to limit their wrist action on windy days, because the golf ball will have a tendency to balloon on them.

The six maneuvers of the wrist and forearm Figure 1-11 is from my book, The ESPY Golf Swing Coach, in Section 1.14 that explains these maneuvers in detail and how they apply to the golf swing sequence.

Syncing/Presetting Maneuvers Used to Create a Simple Golf Swing Fundamental, Sprocket Mechanics

The wrists synced with the forearms are unique because of these six different maneuvers that can be performed, two of these maneuvers allow the golfer to properly preset the wrists and sync the wrist with the forearm. Synchronizing the wrists with the forearms allows the elbows to be synchronized with the shoulders and torso, these are high threshold muscles in the upper body. This provides the golfer with the sudden burst of energy from a simple golf swing fundamental, called Sprocket mechanics. This golf swing fundamental is the reason that professional golfers explain that power and speed are generated from their core body; and not from swing the arms and forearms faster or harder.

REMEMBER Yogi Berra’s quote about the baseball swing that can be applied to the golf swing- You don’t have to swing hard to hit a home run. If you got the timing (tempo and technique), it’ll go.

My grandfather, H.Q. Boatright added the phrase tempo and technique to Yogi’s quote.

The other two maneuvers that assist the golfer in creating acceleration are Radial and ulna Deviation, referred to as cocking and un-cocking the wrists. Even long distance drivers depend on cocking and un-cocking their wrists to provide the acceleration and speed component to reach drives of 400 yards and plus. Nothing in the arm or upper forearm can respond faster than the wrists’ and lower forearms’ natural reaction by un-cocking. Even major league baseball batter’s depend heavily on the wrist action in their swing to raise their on base averages.

The Sync/Preset is done by simply supinating, or synching, and pronating, or presetting the wrists into the Lock Position. This syncs the elbows with the shoulders. This provides the golfer with a tremendous mechanical advantage called sprocket mechanics. This is like installing a turbocharger driver component in your golf swing sequence.

Baseball-Type Golf Swing Supination Pronation Neutral

Synching and presetting allows the wrists to establish the natural cocking and un-cocking maneuvers for the acceleration component, shown below. This sequence of synching and presetting your golf swing allows the golfer to place the golf swing on autopilot during the downswing from the top of the golfer’s swing. What is also significant about the supination (SYNC) and pronation (PRESET) maneuver is that it helps the golfer to eliminate swing thoughts, the golfer can instead rely on muscle memory, like a major league baseball batters does. This Sync/Preset maneuver takes the golfer from a Passive golf swing to a Proactive golf swing sequence.

Even baseball players initiate their baseball swings using the same supination and pronation maneuvers

Even major league baseball players initiate their baseball swings using the same supination and pronation Proactive maneuver. If you’ve ever played baseball before, you already have the basic concept of the Sync/Preset components in your muscle memory arsenal. Even Ben Hogan refers to the supination and pronation maneuvers in his books, focusing on his Hypothenar to produce each element. Further evidence is indicated by the time-lapse photography below of the golf swing vs. the baseball swing are the very same wrist maneuver the baseball batter use.

The time-lapse photography of the golf swing vs. the baseball swing indicate how the wrist action are the same maneuver.   Boxing Glove Wrists

This comparison between the golf swing vs. the baseball swing became the basis of my book, The ESPY Golf Swing Coach, I also use the boxing gloves technique to help the golf student to isolate the proper wrist area and action to set the Sync/Preset maneuver. I call it associated learning, or Apperception. The term wristwatch is a misnomer, because the wrists are really below the wristbands on the boxing gloves (illustrated above). Presetting the wrists eliminates the stress and tension from the golfer’s mind, especially on the first tee box or making that soft chip or pitch shot around the green.

To Sync/Preset the golfer’s wrist, the right-handed golfer needs to think about a “J” in their left hand; and a “U” in their right hand to CAM (Sync) and CAM-OVER (Preset) their wrists with their lower forearms, or wristbands. The J and U make up the JUCO Sync/Preset Technique. The golfer needs to think how the J and U influences the maneuver of each hand/wrist based on how each letter are positioned in the palm of each hand. The golfer will be surprise of how much distance and control they will develop using the JUCO Sync/Preset golf swing Technique.

The golfer will be surprise of how much distance and control they will have using the JUCO Sync/Preset Technique.

The golfer will be surprise of how much distance and control they will have using the JUCO Sync/Preset Technique.

Even baseball players that I have worked with in golf coaching sessions have benefited from the JUCO Sync/Preset Technique that can be directly applied to their baseball game, as well. These two elements, SYNCH, or supination, is responsible for synching my right elbow with my shoulders. The PRESET, or pronation, locks the right elbow with the shoulders. This was the same golf swing technique that Mr. Arnold Palmer was working with President Eisenhower on at a Pro-Am.

These two elements, Supination and Pronation, set two of the largest and strongest muscles in the hand, Hypothenar and Thenar, capable of transferring tremendous amount of torque from the body, down through the arms and powerful forearms and into the wrists. Any exercise that includes supination and pronation maneuvers, like using a dumbbells or a Medicine Ball exercise (5 lbs to 15 lbs), builds the power and strength of the forearms and wrists.

Left Forearm

This type of exercise works three additional muscles responsible for transferring torque for power to the ball at impact. These exercises will also work the Brachio-radialis, Pronator Quadratus, and the Palmaris Longus muscles. The Brachio-radialis muscle can perform both the supination and pronation maneuvers, and retract the forearm at the elbow. All are critical in the golf swing sequence. The more you understand the Sync/Preset JUCO golf swing fundamental, the better and more consistent golf swing you can make. Consistency is a key golf swing fundamental.

This is what my book, The ESPY Golf Swing Coach, does for the golfer so that  you can execute better and more consistent golf shots to lower your handicap using Proactive muscle memory instead of Passive swing thoughts.

A Recommendation for your Golf Game:

I would like to recommend an interesting radio program that I regularly listen to from my home state Arkansas on my I-Heart Radio app on KARN 102.9 FM station, out of Little Rock, AR. They air a golf show called Arkansas Fairways and Greens, at 7:00 AM CT each Saturday morning, hosted by Bob Steel, and co-hosted by Jay Fox and Charles Crowson. Bob occasionally as has his guess Alex Myers with Golf Digest and Ron Sirak with Golf Channel. I was interviewed on his show about my book, The ESPY Golf Swing Coach. This show is worth tuning into for golf news and information.

Jay Fox is an Administrator with Arkansas State Golf Association that discuss amateur golf and rules of the game.
