QATSPY-newlogo There are simple techniques that both amateur and scratch golfers could implement in their swing sequence to gain more power, distance, and have better performance. I have not yet met a golfer who did not want to know how to increase their power and speed and, more importantly, control in their golf swing. Even a professional golfer would not pass up this opportunity for more distance, with control.

Technique is the ‘Holy Grail’ in golf for power, speed, and distance, rather than swinging the club as hard as you can, or in baseball terms, swinging for the fence. Yogi Berra’s quote perfectly describes the importance of technique in the golf swing. Yogi once stated that– You don’t have to swing hard to hit a home run. If you got the timing, it will GO!” I would change the wording a little by replacing timing with right tempo and adding technique.

The revised quote would read– You don’t have to swing hard to hit a home run. If you got the right tempo and technique, it will GO!

An important technique that will naturally establish tempo to increase the golfer’s power, speed, and control is by simply presetting the wrists. Tempo and technique are like feeding spinach to Popeye for strength. Presetting the wrists is more of a finesse approach to golf, using sprocket mechanics (the elbows and shoulders) than just using brute force with 320 pairs of muscles. I’m more aligned with the philosophy of Henry David Thoreau, of KEEPING THINGS SIMPLE. If I knew that I could preset 80 percent of my golf swing naturally, just by presetting my wrists, I would take advantage of this technique, just for the confidence it provides.

When you use the word PRESET, you’re not just referring to setting up the golf swing itself, but the muscles used in the golf swing, as well. This is where the golfer realizes the greatest advantage of using The ESPY Golf Swing Coach self taught technique. Two simple elements (Synch and Protract) allow the golfer to naturally Synch and Protract, or coil, the body’s muscles to generate the power for speed at impact.

Presting The Wrist Presetting the wrists provides the golfer with the confidence to relax and enjoy their golf game, without the uncertainty of swing thoughts. In my book, I use the terms CAM and CAM-OVER to help the golfer preset their wrists. There are two pads at the base of the palm called the thenars (referring to the thenar and the hypothenar). These are the turbochargers in the golf swing. Even Ben Hogan realized this and referenced the Hypothenars in his book. If you look closely at the illustration of the wrists and hands in the preset position, you will understand the importance of the CAMMING and CAMMING-OVER technique. You will notice the right forearm, specifically the right ulna bone does not out of the address position significantly. The right lower forearm does torque clockwise. But this is expected in the ESPY Golf Swing.

Preset Channel Lock1 The illustration to the left will help the golfer understand the importance of axes and sprockets in the golf swing. The right Humerus and Ulna bones (the secondary axis) and the golfer’s spinal column (the primary axis) are pivotal parts in the ESPY Golf Swing. Think of the right forearm as a camshaft that engages the two sprockets (the elbows and shoulders) to set up the body’s natural mechanics.

Just as the bicyclist has the ability to shift gears to their advantage to climb hills or develop speed on flats or downhill, the golfer can use their elbows and shoulders to develop power (in the takeaway) and speed (in the downswing). The ESPY Golf Swing Coach takes advantage of the golfer’s natural mechanics to increase their power, speed, and control.

10-speed gears

The Small gear represents the elbows and the larger gear represents the shoulders. Basic sprocket mechanics allows Power to be produce with the small gear turning the larger gear (Takeaway). Speed is produce with the larger gear turning the smaller gear (Downswing). You will be amazed how the golf ball explodes off the clubface at impact like there’s a turbocharger in the golf club and the solid sound with no vibration in the club handle.

If you get an opportunity to see Lisa Cornwell’s interview with Ken Duke on the Golf Channel, you will see Ken Duke refer to hinging, or what I refer to as presetting, the wrists. My technique has a slight variation to Mr. Duke’s. His is done more with the left hand and wrist, while my is more with the right hand and wrist. One reason it due to the secondary axis consisting of the right Humerus and Ulna bones serving as the camshaft.
