There is a great quote about perception that states- Man can count the seeds in an apple, but only God can count the number of apples in a seed.
If there is one area of life that proves that perception doesn’t equal reality, it is sports. Sports is a great allegory to use in life to demonstrate what a person is actually capable of achieving, when given an opportunity to do so. The biggest factor in a person’s capabilities is their strength and perseverance of their heart, or what some refer to as one’s True Grit.
Providing Opportunity
The strength of a team is their recruiting and, just as important, how the coaching staff conditions and develops their players. I made a presentation on the topic of perception and its impact on outcomes. How we perceive situations and people will be 80 percent of our ability to achieve objectives.
Two people can look at a situation where one person sees obstacles, while the other person sees opportunities. Same with failure; while one person sees failure as a condition to limit their potential, another person sees failure as an opportunity to gain knowledge, understanding, and more important to gain experience. This is why participating in some form of sport is important for kids to develop their character.
The presentation that I presented at this conference was entitled The Importance of the Eye Exam. If you want to make an impactful presentation, use a title that is a great Ice Breaker. Use the Ice Breaker to engage your audience. As part of my presentation, I had two PowerPoint slides- One was a slide of a slim gentlemen walking across a college campus. I asked a rhetorical question of the audience- If you were a recruiter for a football team, would you consider this gentleman as a candidate?
I waited for about 30- seconds before I revealed the gentleman’s identity in the second slide. The gentleman was Jerry Rice, walking across the campus of Mississippi Valley State University in Itta Bena, Mississippi. Both Ole Miss and Mississippi State didn’t recruit Jerry Rice, from Starkville, Mississippi.
Another great slide that would have gone along with the slide of Jerry Rice would have been DeVonta Smith, the receiver from the University of Alabama, who just won the Heisman Trophy. Going back to my topic header above- God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.
You can measure a man’s height, weight, and half-of-a-dozen other criteria, but the true measure of a person’s ability is the strength of their heart, will, determination, and perseverance of character. Nothing can substitute for these intangibles. Some of the most powerful forces in life have to do with forces we can’t seen, but have to be examine carefully.
The only way to release a person’s capabilities is with an opportunity. Coach Nick Saban and his staff are credited with their ability to see potential in players. Who can forget Najee Harris hurdling over the six-foot-one Nick McCloud corner back of Notre Dame to run for 53- yards after defying gravity?
Our obligation to each other is to provide opportunity and help develop each other’s potential.
