A Twitter Poll- Is Golf a Real Athletic Sport, The Results: 68% replied NO, and Only 32% replied YES! That Begs a Follow-up Question
Two follow-up questions that I would liked to have asked those responding to the poll with NO, if Golf was a real athletic Sport:
- How many of those who replied that golf wasn’t a real sport have ever played golf?
- How many have ever carried around a 40- pound bag of clubs and equipment over 8 miles and still made PAR?
If you play golf the way it was intended to be played, you walk the 18- holes, about 8.75 miles, on days where the temperature and humidity are both 90. You must maintain enough mental conditioning to control your breathing and heart rate to make the shot from tee-to-green and not have tension in your muscles, which can destroy a golf shot.
Golf requires incredible amount flexibility, in addition to core strength. Power and clubhead speed aren’t based on how fast the golfer can swing their arms and forearms, but how much core torque the golfer can generate to make those 280 yard-plus drives to hit a 20-yard wide fairway and still have the finesse to make those 5-to-10 yard chip and pitch shots.
In order to have your breathing and heart rate under control to make these type shots into almost pinpoint accuracy requires finesse and a fitness program based on Cardio, Aerobics, Strength, Pilayoga, Exercise Regimen and a strict diet. My exercise routine is approximately One hour and 20- minutes long, five days a week. I burn between 420 to 430 calories during each workout.
You can’t play golf on a consistent basis if you are out of shape, and the first sign that you are not in shape, besides your heart and breathing rate, is back injuries. In order to have a strong back, you have to have strong abdominal muscles.
Two of my exercises that I focus on the most are my four Medicine Ball exercises, my AB Roller routine, and riding my bicycle ten miles every day. I even include a 9-Minute Punching Bag workout routine.
Below I would like to enter a photograph into evidence to prove that golf the way it is supposed to be played requires fitness:

Golf is what Bobby Jones, Sr. stated: Golf is a game that is played on a five-inch course – the distance between your ears.
Here’s probably the best advantage of playing golf
Golf is an excellent sport to prevent Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and to treat PTSD in Veterans. I work with Veterans who return home from the battlefield and are dealing with PTSD by getting them into golf. This is called Cognitive Behavior Theory, where even yoga goes a long way to relieve the effects of PTSD.
I Have attached my Operation DOG Tag for people dealing with the effects of PTSD:
