An Owner’s Manual Covering the Basic Golf Swing Mechanics and Fundamentals in Golf
If you received a set of golf clubs or a new driver for Christmas and can’t wait to test them out, do yourself an enormous favor and read the Owner’s Manual for learning basic golf swing mechanics. Before you head out to your backyard, a vacant field, or to the driving range, spend some valuable time and learn how to take advantage of your clubs and the body’s golf swing mechanics. When used correctly, your new clubs can provide the distance and control you are looking for, without a lot of effort or frustration.
There is one technique that can help any golfer of any level or handicap to improve their golf swing mechanics. The ESPY Golf Swing Coach has a subtitle, Delta Technique Geared for Distance and Control. This procedure allows the golfer to set up 80 percent of their golf swing with two simple elements, the Sync/Preset maneuver, to place the handle of the club into the Lock position, shown below. This allows the golfer to preset their wrists to create enormous power and control. The golf swing mechanics in The ESPY Golf Swing Coach are similar to the golf swing fundamentals used by Bobby Jones, Ken Duke, Angela Stanford, Marco Dawson, David Duval, and P.J. Boatwright, Jr.
A Baseball Technique Used in the Golf Swing Sequence
To dramatically improve the golfer’s skills and golf swing mechanics, the golfer can take skills learned from baseball and apply these same skills directly to their golf swing sequence. This process is called Apperception, where skills from one sport can be applied to another sport to take advantage of a previously developed skill set. The ESPY Golf Swing Coach technique allows the golfer to take their baseball swing from the batter’s box and apply this swing to the tee box, without having to learn a new set of skills or develop another series of muscle memories. The Apperception technique is illustrated in the time-lapse photograph comparing the golf swing with the baseball swing.
The advantage of applying the baseball swing fundamentals to develop the golfer’s golf swing mechanics is that these skills were most generally learned at a young age that developed the critical fine motor skills. These fine motor skills are difficult to develop at a later age. To jump-start the coaching process and reduce the golfer’s learning curve, the baseball-type swing in The ESPY Golf Swing Coach offers the golfer a huge advantage in developing their golf swing mechanics and fundamentals.
How many times, while standing in the batter’s box, did you think about your swing mechanics or fundamentals? I would hasten to guess, NONE! Your only focus was on the baseball and how the ball was moving and how the threads were rotating. This was what was meant by the Be the Ball quote in the movie Caddyshack.
Caddyshack– Be the Ball quote: (Ty Webb- played by Chevy Chase mentioned to Danny Noonan- played by Michael O’Keefe) I’m going to give you a little advice. There’s a force in the universe that makes things happen. And all you have to do is get in touch with it, stop thinking, let things happen, and be the ball.
The only thing the golfer needs to understand in The ESPY Golf Swing Coach Technique is how one of the most critical muscles in each wrist and a key knuckle are Synced/Preset. This key muscle is called the Hypothenar, and the key knuckle is the golfer’s Pinky knuckle. Even Ben Hogan in his commentaries referred to the Hypothenar.
A Boxing Technique Used in the Golf Swing Sequence
In Boxing, the boxer is trained to use the area between their pinky and ring knuckle on each hand to deliver a powerful punch or blow. The reason for this particular area is that the Hypothenar and pinky knuckle are directly in line with the forearm bone, called the Ulna. The Sync/Preset maneuver pivots about this critical bone. The other technique the boxer uses is keeping their elbows next to their side. This was the same technique that Arnold Palmer gave President Eisenhower right before a Pro-Am. Arnold Palmer noticed that the President’s right elbow was separating from his right side.
The ESPY Golf Swing Coach uses the techniques from both the baseball-type swing and boxing to help the golfer develop their own natural golf swing mechanics that are more instinctive and can be performed without any swing thoughts. The only thing the golfer has to do is to focus on the ball or their target area. Nothing else enters the golfer’s subconscious mind.
A Technique Used in Golf to Develop the Golfer’s Subconscious Mind- Their Mental Horsepower
There’s a condition that drivers experience while driving down the highway. This condition is called Driver Hypnosis. While Driving Hypnosis is an unsafe condition for driving a vehicle on the highway, it is great for driving your golf ball down the fairway. What occurs in Driver Hypnosis is that the driver is performing most driving tasks on autopilot, with the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind usually accounts for 75 percent of our driving tasks. Under Driving Hypnosis, the percentage of the driving tasks that the subconscious mind takes over goes up to 95 percent.
This is how the ESPY Golf Swing Coach is set up to train the subconscious mind to perform the golf swing on autopilot. This is similar to the batter in the batter’s box. The batter in the batter’s box doesn’t think about their swing mechanics. The batter only focuses on the ball and/or target. This is how the golfer should execute their golf swing. This process is how The ESPY Golf Swing Coach allows the golfer to coach themselves, based on The ASPEN QATSPY Coaching Pyramid below:
The ESPY Golf Swing Coach takes the batter’s swing from the batter’s box to the tee box. This allows the golfer to Synch/Preset the wrists and elbows with the shoulders to create POWER in the takeaway and SPEED in the downswing. This allows the golfer to set up their golf swing, based on a ten-speed bicycle:
Here are some key characteristics to follow to improve your golf game:
- Golf is a mental game (90 percent mental and 10 percent physical).
- Be patient (muscle memory is developed over time, not overnight).
- Break the swing into simple segments ( Sync, Protract or Preset, and Yaw).
- Take a slow approach to your golf practice and warm up.
- Be consistent in your setup and golf swing mechanics.
- Disappointment builds experience (don’t get discouraged).
- The subconscious mind has no concept of time, simulation, or actual conditions; take advantage of this.
- Use a golf baton to practice your technique during the day, illustrated below.
Two decisions that you can make for yourself and your kids are to get a copy of my book, The ESPY Golf Swing Coach, and to place the book and a golf club into their hands. You will never look back, but only forward. You will not miss with this decision for you and/or your kids.

A Recommendation for your Golf Game:
I would like to recommend an interesting radio program that I regularly listen to from my home state Arkansas on my I-Heart Radio app on KARN 102.9 FM station, out of Little Rock, AR. They air a golf show called Arkansas Fairways and Greens, at 7:00 AM CT each Saturday morning, hosted by Bob Steel, and co-hosted by Jay Fox and Charles Crowson. Bob occasionally as has his guess Alex Myers with and Ron Sirak with Golf Digest. I was interviewed on his show about my book, The ESPY Golf Swing Coach, by Bob Steel. This show is worth tuning into for golf news and information.
Jay Fox is an Administrator with Arkansas State Golf Association (ASGA) and discusses amateur golf and rules of the game.
So pour up a cup of coffee and enjoy an hour of informative discussion about the sport of golf and its impact on improving our lives.
Most states have either a State Golf Association and/or a P.J. Boatwright Internship that homeschooled students can take advantage of to help them establish an athletic activity into their curriculum. The State Golf Association provides young students with the ability to track and document their handicap, while competing in tournaments.
Golf is an excellent sport that homeschooled students can compete in, either on an individual or a team level without risk of severe injuries. The majority of Colleges offer scholarships to students to help them continue their passion for the sport of golf.
