Even at 68, I still enjoy aviation, I just need to be mindful of the time in the cockpit to not place RPM on my body.

Experiencing Numbness in my Feet– Finding the cause of nerve issues can be mysterious as Arthur Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes’ mystery novels. I have been posting articles of various test; X-Rays taken to find the cause of numbness in my feet

Since 2020, I have been experiencing numbness in my feet and tightness in my calves muscles that have only gotten progressively worse since 2020.

In December of 2023, I was diagnosed with Stage 2 Prostate Cancer. Guys please make sure you get your PSA Test during your annual physical, especially if you are over the age of 40. My PSA at age 66 in October of 2023 was 6.21. Normal PSA is at or below 4.0. I had a Prostatectomy in February of 2024; but I did not have to have chemo. I’m clear now of cancer, thank God.

Chemo can add to the issue of sciatic nerve issues.

Post Surgery Rehab

For my rehab after my Prostatectomy was to strengthen my 14- floor muscles, particularly the Piriformis muscle, I performed the following five- pose exercises along with my normal workout routine once a day:

Cobra Pose

Knees to Chest Crunch Pose

Bench Leg Cross Pose

Gentile Supine Twist Pose

Child Pose

These five poses are also great for sciatica and Neuropathy, as well.

Another possible problem that can cause tight calves and numbness in the feet is either sciatica or neuropathy. Neuropathy can be caused by the lack of our ability to absorb vitamin B-12, especially for those of us over the age of 40. We don’t absorb vitamin B-12 as well as we did before our mid to late 30’s. To counter this, we can take a vitamin B-12 supplement daily for good nerve health and support. These are now in chewable form.

Lack of Vitamin B-12 Absorption

Another issue for the lack of absorbing B-12 is intestine issues. In my case, in 2017, I developed a case of Diverticulitis, not fun at all, where later I had a Colectomy, this is where the ruptured section of the colon is removed. Since I’m 68- years old now, intestine issues were a concern in my case causing the tight calves and numbness in my feet. But this still wasn’t the complete or main issue I was having.

But there is still one other issue that I needed to consider; and that deals with ergonomics. Ergonomics includes positioning of the body, repetitive motion, pinch points, and pressure points on the muscles.

If you read any of my previous postings, I used to fly over 550 flight-hours per year performing aerial patrol in the cockpit. Since I’m 6-4, that means I’m 64- inches tall, or 5 foot- 4 inches, sitting in a cockpit for 3- hours in between fuel stops is an issue, especially when the back of your legs are pressed against the cockpit seat. The pressure placed on the back of my legs, especially due to the length of my legs, was the main issue that I later discovered was the issue this past March, 2025.

Repetitive motion, Pinch & Pressure Points on Muscles and the Sciatic Nerve

The sciatic nerve in the back of the legs that can lead to tight calves and numbness in the feet.

People usually associate sciatic nerve issues with disc in the lumbar area of the back where the sciatic nerve exits the spinal column, please refer to the photograph above of my back and the back of my legs where I have traced out the sciatic nerve branches.

But X-Rays done at my orthopedic surgeon’s office didn’t indicate a disc issue, i.e., either due to a bulging or herniated disc that places pressure on the sciatic nerve. I also had an Electromyography (EMG) at my neurologist’s office. My neurologist couldn’t even detect any neuropathy effect on my nerves. Both of these tests were great news, but that still left me not knowing what could be causing my tight calves and numbness on the bottom of my feet.

My Second Career

In addition to aviation, working in my welding shop, and on my farm, I enjoy writing books on sports, health, fitness, and espionage adventures that I love interviewing military personnel for for historical events. This required me to sit at my desk in my home office for hours on my laptop. This was the main issue causing my tight calves and numbness in my feet.

The problem was I got accustom to sitting where my knees are just below my hip sockets. This places additional pressure on the sciatic nerve at the back of my legs just like a disc pressure can have on the sciatic nerve, but this was just below my glutes muscles on the back of my legs, just below my shorts.

It wasn’t until I had finished up my latest book, The Sayeret Warriors of Rephaim, this past March, 2025, that I started focusing on pressure I was placing on the back of my legs, just below my glutes. This is where the sciatic nerve runs down from the spinal column, past the glute muscles, and down the back of the legs and into my fete. Since I have short legs, I have to be aware of the pressure that I’m placing on the back of my legs.

So I adjusted my height of my seat at my desk, in my cockpit, and in my vehicles where I could raise my knee cap (patella), where my kneecaps are just above my hip sockets, and also sit on a memory foam cushion, especially on my tractor.

I Experienced my First Relief

Yesterday, while working in my hangar, welding shop, and on my farm bush hogging, I experienced relief that I have not had in the past four years. Ergonomics plays an important part in my relief.

So please be aware of the RPM-Factors (Repetitive motion, Positioning, Pinching, Pressure Points on Muscles). Flying for 35- years and placing pressure on the back of my legs sitting at my desk and in the cockpit played a huge factor in the tight calves and my numb feet.

After making this ergonomic adjustment of sitting; I can now get back on the golf course and work in the shop and farm and not have discomfort that I have had over the past four years, since 2020. It takes some time to improve the tight calves and numbness in the feet, but I’m improving gradually.

Like they say, SITTING is the next Health Crisis we are experiencing now. Get up and stretch and move and also have a fitness routine that includes strength training. Strength training is your Age-Defying access to not showing your age. Above photograph was taken in November 2024 in our hangar after a photoshoot.

NOTE: All of my following E-Books are on KINDLE where the links for each book will take you to KINDLE to download your copy of each.

These techniques are explained and illustrated in my book entitled The Golfer’s Sync-Preset Strike Zone APP that in on KINDLE in E-Book:

To get me back into shape and rehab I went back to my SARSO DIET & FITNESS Program this in my E-book on KINDLE:

As I was recovering last year from my Prostate Cancer, I wrote a book covering one of the most elite fighting unit in the world called The Sayeret Matkal Unit that executed the Raid on Entebbe in July 4th, 1976. I took my notes from interviews and research and wrote special Operations that have been executed by Sayeret Matkal Unit where I used two ghost names to cover the identities of two Lieutenant Colonels that executed missions with this special operation unit:

All my books are on KINDLE under my name: Charles W. Boatright. What I’m really excited about is the last book that I just published on KINDLE. The Sayeret Warriors of Rephaim that I think you will enjoy reading. I hope that a movie could be made of this showing what our U.S. and other Militaries perform to provide security to their nations.

Please read the background to The Sayeret Warriors of Rephaim.
