The 80th Pearl Harbor Day of Infamy– When Japanese Attacked Pearl Harbor after Talks of Easing the Embargo of Steel, Rubber, & Oil Failed

My experience of Walking and Working among The Greatest Generation!

The surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on the morning of December 07, 1941, did something that changed the entire perspective of America and its role in the World. We, up until then, were considered a third world power behind England and France. But the attack on Pearl Harbor not only plunged America into a Second World War that it was trying to avoid at all costs, but made America into one of the most prosperous Nations the World had ever witness.

It had only been a very short 23-years since World War I had ended on the 11th hour. of 11th day, of the 11th month of 1918- where a lot of men and women lost their lives in what was a senseless war. The attack at Pearl Harbor changed that narrative in just one Sunday in December. Pearl Harbor galvanized the American people, where men and women alike signed up to join the effort to protect and defend their country. It was the manufacturing capacity where men and women alike worked side-by-side in factories to support the War Effort that ended The Depression of 1929.

I had the privilege of working with a Utility Company where a quarter of the Engineering Department were men that served during World War II. I learned a tremendous amount from these men about Engineering Design, Maintenance, and Constriction of transmission lines, but I also learn about their True Grit. Eight of these men helped in rebuilding Pearl Harbor, and one of them served on General MacArthur’s staff.

What I admired the most about these men that I worked with was that these men weren’t reactive, but responded with what was possible, with perseverance of never giving up in following well-defined processes. I also learned the importance of critical thinking, hard-work ethic, pursuit of excellence, and follow discipline and well-established processes systematically.

For example of the Greatest Generation’s imprint on our Country. Men that served with the Tenth Mountain Division that Senator Bob Dole served with as well, returned home and started ski lodges across the country that we enjoy this time of year. The Movie White Christmas depicts this part of this generation history.

This was taken in June of 2015, the year I retired at age 57. I’m the one in the middle on the Double-Channel Steel X-arm replacing the 1934 wooden X-arm in northeastern Mississippi that crosses the Tallahatchie River where Billie Joe McAllister jumped of the Tallahatchie Bridge.

I wouldn’t have accomplished what I did in my 33- years as a Grid Engineer without these men’s influence on my life and career. Those same fundamentals that these men taught me were just as applicable as the day that I retired to start my sports performance and apparel business.

This generation of men and women built one of the most successful and extraordinary economies that made America the major influence to promote Freedom and Liberty wherever they went.

That spirit that was galvanized to start and pursue the America Experiment in 1776 and was demonstrated during the Pearl Harbor Attack and 911 is still part of our frontier mentality and military personnel to pursue principle of Life, Liberty, and Freedom.
