THE QATSPY GOLFER’S PAGE

It is estimated that the golf equipment, consisting of clubs, balls, and bags, made up approximately 25 percent of the Nike business. The other 75 percent was sporting apparel and other sporting equipment. The major decision of any company is what will consist of their core business. Just like Malcolm Gladwell’s book states, it takes 10,000 man-hours to become an expert in an area. The larger the area the company is covering, the more resources the company has to invest in that market. I look at the company’s core business model similar to the U.S. Jeep, it is reliable, great performance, and a icon. Something a company doesn’t want to jeopardize!

Golf equipment is almost similar to the automobile industry, with the amount of technological advancements that are being made for reliability, performance, safety, and protection. These four areas drive the auto industry. The engineering, research, and development (ER&D) serve as the cutting edge to maintain and gain market share. There is one instance where Callaway engineers went to Boeing to gain aerodynamics for their driver.

ER&D is always the most challenging area in business to address. One reason is the testing and time involved in producing new products. Of all the areas of reliability, performance, protection, and safety, it was performance that was the most challenging to address. I was the chairman on the Fall Protection Committee after we had a couple of fall-related incidents. We researched and worked with manufacturers to develop vertical lifelines, lanyards, changes in structure designs, policies, and personal protection equipment. All of these were basically pretty effectively addressed until we came to the full body harness and positioning belt. That’s when things got complicated. The main reason was performance that included conformability. And rightly so.

If you are going to be hanging between 70 to 140 feet above the ground, you want something to be conformable and convenient. If it is not, then your user will find other methods to use.

For us in the utility business, performance was the most difficult area to address that took such a significant amount of time in engineering, research, and development to produce an end product. This might have influenced Nike to discontinue the golf equipment line because of the demands on maintaining the market. Appeal, on the other hand, is mainly based on protection, comfort, eye appeal, and safety. These are less taxing issues than performance.

I personally still have my Nike Slingshot Irons that I have enjoyed since I bought them in 2005. I like the large sole and the weighted cavity backs. Right now, I have no plans on upgrading until the next couple of years. I’m looking at Callaway and the new PXG irons.

But the major part of your golf game that has the most variables still remains the golfer. The clubs are just as good as the golfer. To gain more power, distance, and consistency in your golf game, look at taking your baseball swing from the batter’s box to the tee box with The ESPY Golf Swing Coach. One reason is because the batter is more confident in the batter’s box than the golfer is on the tee box. Two decisions that you can make for yourself and your kids are to get a copy of my book and place the book and a golf club into their hands. You will never look back, but only forward. You will not miss with this for yourself and/or your kids.

A Recommendation for your Golf Game:

I would like to recommend a wonderful radio program that I regularly listen to on my I-Heart Radio app on KARN 102.9 FM station, out of Little Rock, AR. They air a golf show called “Arkansas Fairways and Greens,” at 7:00 AM CT each Saturday morning, hosted by Bob Steel and Jay Fox. Bob occasionally has on his show a guest named Shawn Humphries, a Professional Golf Instructor from Dallas, Texas. One thing that Mr. Humphries stresses is the mental part of golf, not focusing on the results but the process.

Until next time– Be Synched, Tee-to-Green, with The ESPY Golf Swing!
