Other Causes of Your Sciatic Nerve Issues– If you experience numbness in your feet, tight calves, & balance issues it might not be a disk issue. 2014, I had a hip replacement same year I started workout again that lead to losing 52-Lbs

How I discovered my Sciatic Nerve Issue

How I found out the real cause of my sciatic nerve issues by the process of elimination that started with my disks and moved down my leg and my feet; and finally to my right hip after a hip replacement.

Hip Replacement Surgery

In October of 2014, I had a hip replacement. After rehabbing, I was able to start working out again in my gym and when I develop The MELIORA Diet that I started on November 28th, 2014. The MELIORA Diet allowed me to drop 35- Lbs during the month of December of 2014 alone. That’s during the Holidays guys! Refer to my Waistline Chart below, I’m 67 years old in this photo taken in November 2024:

I continued my MELIORA Diet and my CASTER Fitness Program that allowed me to lose 6- inches in my waistline by February 27th, 2015 or 45.3 Lbs. that I was pleased me. But there are always unintentional consequences from even a benefit of losing weight and inches that I soon found out to be the case by 2017.

The weight and inches that I dropped wasn’t just in my waistline, but in my thighs; and where I lost my natural cushion, in my buttocks. I flew a lot during this time period sitting in the cockpit of my aircraft that placed pressure on the sciatic nerve, especially on my right hip. Due to my weight loss, I lost my natural cushion that started to cause sciatic nerve issues that led to numbness in my feet, tight calves, and balance issues.

This doesn’t only affect my right foot and calf area, but my left foot and calf, as well, in what is called referred conditions. The weight and inches that I dropped after my right hip replacement placed pressure on my artificial hip that pinched my sciatic nerve that led to my sciatic symptoms.

Then in December of 2023, I was diagnosed with Stage 2 Prostate Cancer where in February of 2024, I had a Prostatectomy. Surgery in the abdominal area that can impact your sciatic nerve that increases the discomfort level of your symptoms.

My Process of Elimination

In September of 2024, I went to my Orthopedic surgeon to have X-Rays from my back down to my feet. The good news was that it wasn’t my disk that caused pressure on the sciatic nerve. My Orthopedic surgeon sent me for therapy thinking my issues were from Neuropathy. The therapy highlighted one exercise performed with the hips that improved my situation. This caused me to focus on my hips.

Over the Christmas up to the New Year’s Holidays break, allowed me to focus more on my sciatic nerve issues isolating my hips as a possible cause. Just by chance, I was watching a football game between Arizona State and Texas when I leaned toward my left, by rowing over to my left hip. I felt relief from my sciatic nerve issues on the right hip. Now I began to isolate my issues to my right hip, where I had the hip replacement 10- years ago.

Then I started to focus on my hips during my fitness program. I also added additional cushion while sitting, especially in the cockpit and on my bike exercises. Within two (2) days, I started feeling results especially using the following six (6) hip exercises:

Donkey Kickback

Fire-hydrant

Deadlifts (with dumbbells)

Leg Lift Pulses

Side Leg Lifts (Standing of laying on the side)

Plie Squats (with dumbbells)

Almost Immediate Relief

I started my hip exercises on December 31st, 2024 and almost experienced immediate results by January 02nd, 2025.

There are downsides to losing weight, because you lose your natural cushion that you sit on during the course of the day. Being that I spend hours in the cockpit flying, not having my natural cushion to sit on can negatively impacted my sciatic nerve. Now with the additional cushion that I carry with me NOW and my hip exercises listed above, I found relief from my sciatic nerve issues that can cause discomfort, without pain or nerve medication.

If you have sciatic nerve issues, first look just as much to the hips as the lumbar disk. Your discomfort might be from your hip, especially if you lost weight as part of your New Year’s Resolutions that some are expecting to make. You can do a search on the internet for these six hip exercises listed above for directions. Ladies these hip exercises help firm up the thighs and gluts muscles.

Do Not Give Up being Active, Your Health Depends on it

I will be preparing an exercise video in the coming weeks of me doing and explaining these six hip exercises and their benefits. I hope this article helps other people that experience sciatic nerve issues.

Even at age 67, I still remain active in aviation, welding, covering sports, and agriculture. Don’t give up your health-fitness and remain active; especially if you are retired.

The best age-defying therapy that you can do is to remain active and strength training, because resistance training allows the muscles to release a natural growth hormone that provides collagen to the joints and especially to the skin for a younger looking appearance.

Please visit our ACE Sporty Hangar Store for aviation gear and apparel. I also have on KINDLE my Health & Fitness Book to maintain an Age-Defying Lifestyle even at my age of 67:
