UALR Face Masks Petri Dish Bio-Experiment, Testing the N-95, Surgical, Cloth Masks, and Gator wrap to Prevent Transmission of the Virus
With the different types of face masks and wraps that are on the market, the question is, which one provides the best protection to meet local, state, and CDC health requirements?
The University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) microbiology lab performed a test using petri dishes on four different types of face masks, including a neck gator. These test consisted of the FOX 16 Little Rock, Arkansas reporter coughing directly onto a petri dish, with and without any face covering.
The reporter tested each of the four face masks by putting on the mask and coughing three to four times into a labeled petri dish that was held 3- to- 4- inches from the reporter’s mask.
The masks that were tested by the UALR Bio-Lab included the N-95, Surgical Mask, Cloth Mask that we carry in our Online Store, and the Neck Gator.
The first petri test performed, labeled No. 1, was on the N-95 Mask used by medical personnel and are considered the best in providing protection. The second petri test performed, labeled No. 2, was on the typical Surgical Mask that is usually worn by medical staff. The third petri test performed, labeled No. 3, was on the Cloth Mask that is carried in our online store and several people wear where social distancing can’t be maintained. The fourth petri test performed, labeled No. 4, was on the Neck Gator that athletes are wearing playing team sports where it is difficult to wear a face mask and keep track of it.
The Results of the UALR Petri Test
The results of the UALR Test was that the N-95, Cloth Mask, and Neck Gator had no bacteria growth detected on the petri dish after setting in an incubator for a period of time. Surprisingly, the petri dish that had traces of bacteria growth was the surgical mask and of course the petri dish labeled No. 5 where the reporter didn’t wear a face covering while coughing onto the petri dish.

The mask that provided the best level of protection was the N-95 Mask, Cloth Mask that we carry in our Online store, and the Neck Gator. Surprisingly, the surgical mask didn’t perform as well as the N-95, Cloth mask, or Neck Gator.
This UALR test proves that N-95, our US WINGS® washable Cloth Mask, and neck gator are effective in protecting the user and others around us as long as the mask can be washed as needed. Question About Mask that Caused Confusion
The real confusion that raised questions and doubt about wearing masks was with mixed signals from the medical experts in March of 2020 that stated masks weren’t necessary to be worn by the general public. Like the famous quote states- You only have one crack at making a good first impression make it count. We operate better when we have the facts in adhering to guidelines.
This was a simple test that could have been performed earlier by medical experts to present to the American Public. When we have evidence, it helps us to make the correct decisions and necessary changes in our lifestyle to improve our health.
Most states and local governments are now requiring masks be worn in public where social distancing can’t be maintained. This was a scientific based experiment conducted by University of Arkansas at Little Rock that proved that cloth masks are just as effective as the N-95 mask.
