THE QATSPY® Leather Jacket Yankee’s Report from a Blue-Collar Worker Perspective of the 2nd Amendment and Handguns

The Bear Bones Facts on Handgun Ballistics- One of the Key Factors for Evaluating Effectiveness of handguns isn’t just the Caliber, but the KE

The (KE), or Kinetic Energy, also known as Knockdown Energy that the Caliber of the handgun produces should also be a factor into your consideration. I have done the Kinetic Energy in foot-pounds for seven (7) of the most popular caliber of handguns, including one that doesn’t get the recognition that it deserves, and this is the 38 Super.

One of the contributing factors for the 38 Super that might have contributed to it not getting the recognition that it deserves lies in its name, Super. The actual nomenclature that it should have had is the 38 Mag. This Caliber of handgun was even used by John Dillinger, due to its accuracy, low recoil, and knockdown power it had. At one time, it was in the running for consideration by the U.S. Military as its sidearm that was given to the 0.45 ACP Model 1911 that has seen service for over a hundred years.

The 0.38 Mag ACP Model 1911 Handgun a classic since 1929 that has better knockdown power than the 0.45 ACP and is just edged out by the 9 mm.

When you are looking for a handgun to fit your self-defense needs, there are the several popular calibers, i.e., .25- ACP, .380 ACP, 38 Special, .357 Magnum, 9 mm, .40 S&W, 44 Magnum, and the famous .45 ACP Model 1911 that John Moses Browning designed. John Moses Browning was a engineering genius. His M2 0.50 Caliber Machine gun is still in used on the battlefield with little modifications.

There is one additional caliber handgun that I have in my collection and like shooting that has been around since 1929, and that is the 38 Super. Until the 0.357 Magnum was developed, the 0.38 Super was the most powerful handgun that could penetrate body armor of that day.

The 38 Super is mainly used in competition shooting. I was a recipient of several boxes of 38 Super ammunition at my shooting club when the manager gave me these boxes that someone shooting there a week before thinking it was ammunition for a 38 Special, before someone stopped him. The 38 Super is too hot of a load for the barrel of a 38 Special to handle.

One reason that I like the 38 Super is because it has less recoil, better accuracy rate, and better knockdown, or Kinetic Energy, even compared to that of the .45 ACP, at 25- yards. And it is just barely edged out by the 9 mm pistol, see KE Ballistics below, that I have calculated for the range of 25- yards.

The Increased Awareness for Handguns due to Self-Defense Needs

Due to one political party’s push to de-fund the police and ordering police in certain cities and circumstances to stand down, there has been an increased interest in handguns for personal protection and for self-defense. The natural tendency for people is to ask what type and caliber of handgun do I need.

One of the most popular calibers for personal defense, especially by women, is the 0.380 ACP Caliber handgun. One reason is its weight, compact size and recoil. But there are other factors that needs to be considered than the compact size, and recoil for personal protection, that is the knockdown factor, or the amount of Kinetic Energy (in foot-pounds) that caliber produces at certain distances.

The Ballistics of Popular Handguns used by Gun Enthusiast

For comparison purposes, I have calculated the Kinetic Energy for eight (8) calibers at the shooting distance to a target of 25- yards. This is the outer distance for a handgun. This will give you a little more information in selecting the caliber of handgun that fits your needs:

0.380 ACP:…………….152.85 ft-Lbs.

0.38 Special:……………. 200.45 ft-Lbs.

0.45 ACP: ……………………. 334.19 ft-Lbs.

0.38 Super:……………… 351.22 ft-lbs.

9 mm:…………………… 355.49 ft-Lbs.

0.40 S&W:……………….. 429.73 ft-Lbs.

0.357 Magnum:………… 523.90 ft-Lbs.

0.44 Magnum:…………… 987.67 ft-Lbs.

Here are some considerations that should be taken into account with your selection:

·  The size of the handgun and how it will be carried.

·  How easy is it to operate and tiger pull, slide action.

·  Recoil and weight of the handgun.

·  Safety operation and handling.

·  Reloading.

I would like to add that without the 2nd Amendment, we wouldn’t have had the 1st Amendment or the U.S. Constitution, or the remaining Bill of Rights that are specific rights we have as Americans.
