THE QATSPY® Home Depot Orange Bucket Challenge Developing the Athlete’s Subconscious Mind’s Performance

By: Charles W. Boatright

Rule 6 of Subconscious Mind- Always prevails in conflicts with the Conscious mind. You Train the Subconscious Mind, But Condition the Body

This has your best resource for Sports Psychology for performance, mind over matter. The Bible is one of the best resources for training the athlete’s mind. Ninety (90%) percent of the athlete’s performance deals with their mental training.

If the Apostle Paul were alive today, he would be a phenomenal coach, because of the mental game he brings to the field of play. One particular passage that I highlight is in 1st Corinthians 9: 24 through 27-

  • (24) Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win.
  • (25) Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we are imperishable.
  • (26) Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air;
  • (27) but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have teach (or train) others, I myself will not be disqualified.

Pay close attention to verse 24 where Paul writes that all run, but only one receives the prize! I especially like that point that Paul makes, one person wins the prize not all participants.

Now to training and conditioning during your practice sessions- The athlete must make a distinction between training and conditioning that Paul alludes to in 1st Corinthians 9:27 But I (Paul) discipline my body and make it my slave to how I have trained the mind.

This is true in athletics and especially golf, as the athlete or golfer wants to train their subconscious mind and condition their body to follow their training. One main reason for this is that the athlete’s subconscious mind will prevail, if there is a conflict between the subconscious mind and the conscious mind and body.

The conscious mind functions as a relay for the subconscious mind in how it is programmed. If you train without conditioning or programming your body, you will have mass confusion on your hands, because the muscle responses and sequence aren’t present to support your training.

One of the keys to performing consistently on the field of play, or especially on the golf course, is repetition. Repetition is doing the same thing over and over in the exact same sequence, without deviation under the similar conditions.

Conditions are a major concern for college football coaches this year because of how they have to practice. The coaches, due to COVID-19, couldn’t hold scrimmages for their teams to practice during the early part of the summer camps. To some of the coaches, this is a huge unknown of how their teams will perform under actual conditions.

One way that I have to train my subconscious mind and condition my body is to make my practice more demanding than my course play. I use what I call The Home Depot Orange Bucket Challenge. I set up a series of 3- Orange, 5-gallon buckets representing a 520-yard par-5. See my YouTube Video below:

NOTE: This video was made prior to me losing 52-pounds. I’m in the process of making another Home Depot Orange Bucket Challenge Driver.

My objective is to hit 4-out-of-5 golf shots to within 4 yards of each bucket to continue to the next orange bucket. If more than one golf shot misses the 4-yard target, I must pick up all five golf balls and start over until I hit 4-out-of-5 at all of the three orange buckets. This reinforces Rule No. 5 of the Subconscious Mind that states, What is expected is realized. This is training the mind in order to condition the body.

In order for the athlete to maximize the subconscious mind, where 90 percent of their performance is, the athlete has to train their mind and condition the body to respond in kind. In other words, your body has to be on the same page of the playbook that the subconscious mind is working from.
