Rule No. 2 of The Subconscious Mind: Your Subconscious Feels that Time Passes Faster than Your Conscious Mind Does. The Athlete’s Advantage
Sports Psychologists can use Subconscious Rule No. 2 as a technique to improve the athlete’s training and performance. I’m going to use three (3) examples where athletes have proven this Rule of the Subconscious Mind.
There is a term given to people that are high-performing, and the term is the Mind’s Eye. This is the ability of those high-performing personalities to have the capacity to develop dual vision. This is where people can see their performance, even before they step foot onto the field, course, or court. These people can either speed up or slow down the perception of time.
If the athlete can learn to not only perform with the mind’s eye, but actually train with their mind’s eye, they are able to achieve incredible accomplishments with what seems to be like little effort.
But there is a downside to using and relying exclusively on the mind’s eye approach to performance. That is why your conscious mind can’t respond to the pace of your subconscious mind, right out of the gate. It is like a pitcher who has to warm up before they can throw pitches at velocities they like to achieve. I’m in the same boat, as I have to start my warm-up period with my sand wedge, with short and slow pitch shots before proceeding through my mid- and long-Irons, fairway metals, and finally my driver. This isn’t to just engage my conscious mind, but to warm up and stretch my muscles and activate muscle memory.
So in the golfer’s case, start your round with a conservative approach to engage your muscle memory, or link between the high threshold and low threshold muscles. This is the downside to using your mind’s eye that perceives time at a faster pace. High level performing athletes can actually slow down their perception of time which is to their advantage. During interviews with professional athletes, they describe how everything seemed to slow down. Professional baseball players alluded to this while looking at a 90-mph fast ball.
Two (2) Conditions that Engages the Mind’s Eye
First Condition– The Fast Ball: Wade Boggs gave an interview with the Saint Petersburg Times reporter Tom Jones, where he explained how he was able to detect the stitching and the MLB logo on a 92-mph fast ball, even before it reached the strike zone. He could determine what pitch was thrown and where and if the pitch was going to be in the strike zone, even before the pitch got to the strike zone.
As an athlete improves their focus and skills, they can create an IN-THE-ZONE mentality where they can alter their perception of time. Focusing is a subconscious function, and this is why people, especially athletes, experience a hypnotic state of mind, or being IN-THE-ZONE from time-to-time. I even had one mental coach who told me that he discouraged this hypnotic state of mind performance. Actually, I can’t image a better coaching technique than develop IN-THE-ZONE performance. High-performing athletes learn how to develop their focus, or mind’s eye, capability where they describe this as an alternative universe.
Second Condition– Driving Hypnosis- Remember when you first started learning to drive, especially a manual transmission, like how I learned. At first, it was awkward and very difficult to coordinate the brake and accelerator with the clutch, at first. But as you practiced and actually drove on the highway, it became second nature to you. You even know to shift down going around corners.
Here’s a technique the athlete can use to create IN-THE-ZONE mentality from a condition call Driving Hypnosis and actually improve their mental performance. Both Yogi Berra and Robert Trent Jones, Sr. knew our performance was predominantly mental. The athlete, using proper procedures, can develop their instincts to a point where they are automatic, or what is referred to as Driving Hypnosis.
Driving Hypnosis usually occurs on a stretch of scenic highway where the driver is relaxed and enjoying their drive. The driver’s conscious mind is so relaxed that their subconscious mind takes over most if not all driving tasks to a point where the driver doesn’t even remember driving past notable landmarks or along certain parts of the highway for short periods of time, (usually for 5-minutes or less).
However, they were able to negotiate the route of highway and the traffic safely; then later regain conscious awareness of their situation. While Driving Hypnosis is unsafe for driving a vehicle down the highway, it works great for driving a golf ball down the fairway and onto the green.
Here are three conditions that must exist to have Auto-Zone Driving Hypnosis to occur:
- Normal and routine tasks and conditions must exist.
- Rely on a high degree of relaxation, confidence, and muscle memory.
- The conscious and subconscious minds are focused on two different situations.
When I’m training in my golf training center or backyard, I’m not focused on developing swing thoughts, but instead ONLY on developing my instinctive muscle memory. I want to feel each element in my golf swing sequence, without thinking about how my wrists are preset and how my elbows are synced up with my shoulders. If I feel those two NORMAL, instinctive, ROUTINE maneuvers under my 4O5- Training Drill CONDITIONS, I’m CONFIDENT and RELAXED, and just FOCUSED on developing and executing my MUSCLE MEMORY.
