THE KEROSENE COWBOY SMOKER GRIDIRON PIT STOP
By: Charles W. Boatright
To make the most of every cookout with Food & Friends
Kerosene Cowboy Smoker Gridiron PIT STOP– Enjoy Various Types of Wood with a Heavy Metal Smoker Gridiron Pit for your Favorite cuts of Meat. I Built my Heavy Metal Smoker/Grill Pit more as a smoker than a grill with charcoal and wood Pellets for the perfect smoked cut of meat.
The term Kerosene is another term for JET-A Fuel that turbine engines uses.
My favorite wood pellets is Mesquite & Oak wood pellets that can be purchased from Walmart 20 Lb bag under $10.00. I let the charcoal briquettes reach the white hot stage before I put on the Mesquite & Oak Pellets to become char before spreading out the briquettes within the aluminum pan. This delivers the best results and reduces flame ups.
A Heavy Metal Smoker is a Must
A heavy metal that is used in my smoker gridiron pit provides the perfect tailgating experience for those College and NFL Football games that will be kicking off in a few weeks, right during Labor Day weekend. For those tailgating/Griller aficionados, that travel the south and southwest in search for that perfect smoked bar-b-Que. I have a smoker gridiron pit that can bring that same great taste to your next tailgate or backyard cookout!
Even if we come from various backgrounds with a wide range experience and culture, we still have the same common fibers that is a part of that parchment that contains our God given rights of Life, Liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness. These are the common factors we all agree on along with that we agree that there are only two Seasons- Baseball and Football for grilling and smoking.
We work hard at our jobs in order to enjoy the fruit of our Labors with our families and friends to not enjoy the heavy metal of a Smoker Gridiron Pit.
But nothing can bring together the fiber of our great country better than Sports and Food even if we are supporting different teams on the Grid Iron and/or on the Diamond. We still enjoy the spirit of competition whether our team wins or loses. It isn’t the score that we remember vividly; but the friendships formed over tailgating that we recall. So let’s make that special with a Heavy Metal Gridiron Pit.
Why Sports and Food are Essential to Our Social Fiber
This is why Sports and Food are essential to our social fiber and health so that we can work together in our communities, states, and country to make them stronger and more prosperous for all of us to enjoy. The aroma and smoke from a Heavy Metal Smoker Gridiron Pit permeates the atmosphere that will draw people together.
What small differences we have can be similar to our marinades and sauces we used to render that favorite cut of meat we travel across states and the country to enjoy. Any Bar-B-Que Championship will prove that differences and competition deliver the best results. You show up with a heavy metal smoker gridiron pit that draws attention as soon as the pit is fired up with charcoal and that special selective woods. This permeates the air and sends up invitations. You can permeate the summer, fall, or winter air with that aromatic smoke signals that draws people to the pit.
Southern Hospitality at Sporting Events
You can go to the Grove in Oxford, or the Left Field Lounge in Starkville, Mississippi where you can enjoy that southern hospitality offers some of the most friendly people that enjoy the sport of competition and food. Even if they are on the opposing side of the field or whether they use china or paper plates, you savor friendship with that southern-style food.
Whether you are a visitor to Ole Miss or Mississippi State or the other 12 teams in the SEC, you as a fan will still come away enjoying the taste of the southern small town nature that can be offer that is tried and tested over the generations. This is the essence of Sports and Food.
With the addition of Oklahoma and Texas into the SEC, you are going to enjoy some of the best culinary arts that extends from the Atlantic Coast area, through the Mississippi Valley to the Ozarks, to the Midwest of Oklahoma and Texas and down to the Bayou and along Gulf Coast regions.
There is a song that catches the essences of tailgating on Gameday that I often associate with a song by Starbuck- Moonlight Feels Right.
I Enjoy Burning Rods, the Smell of Flux, and working with Heavy Metal
Before I retired as a Grid Engineer from a Transmission line utility after 37-years, I attended a VOTECH College for welding. I plan on welding becoming my second career after I retire at age 57. If you want to have the most fun ever where time doesn’t exist, then take up welding that I find to be therapeutic that you will ever experienced. You will get lost in your work and lose track of all time, that is the idea.
You heard the Late and great Toby Keith’s, that we lost way too soon, song Should’ve Been a Cowboy? We had two versions of his songs: ONE Was- Should’ve Been a Lineman; and the SECOND is- Should’ve Been a Welder. You can change the lyrics up to highlight any Trade Skill that you want that we need. People call these trade skills Blue Collar Workers; I call them skilled workers!
The Objective of Building My Smoker Gridiron Pit
My objective was to recreate my grandfather’s smoker pit that he used in his catering business where I worked since I was 8- years old. But I wanted a mobile version of his smoker pit. My first major project, for better or worse, was going to be a scaled down version of my grandfather’s smoker pit.
A close high school friend, Mike Gray, who is a retired class A welder, after he learned of my aspirations and plans, considered smoker gridiron pit to be an aggressive project to weld up for a beginner. Then after he saw the finished smoker gridiron pit, he remarked that I had guts to attempt and succeeded in such a huge first project.
Hint: Shop drawings are a must for such a project that I understood all too well, shop drawings covers for a lot of inexperience of any welder of any level. As an Structural Engineer I prepare shop drawings for my work as I did in Transmission Lines. Guys & Gals, this is where your math will come in real handy. You know that trig that you took in high school or will take, it will come in real handy in your welding work.
The (P-40B) Warhawk Smoker Gridiron Pit
I knew from my grandfather’s smoker pit that heavy metal was essential and the is essential for the producing the best smoked cut of meat. So I drew up shop drawings for a 0.25 inch thick x 16 inch dia. x 30 inch x 115 Lb heavy metal smoker gridiron pit. The reason that I chose 16 inch dia. was I could get three hamburger patties across the width of the grate.
Don’t ever underestimate the importance of heavy metal in a smoker pit. You will be surprised by the perfect quality of smoked/grilled meats that will be rendering from a custom built smoker gridiron pit that I have enjoyed.
The reason that I took on a major welding project was that I couldn’t find a good smoker/grill pit that I liked that was built from Heavy Metal without building one. Most great smoker/grills on the market can’t deliver that great southern-Midwest taste that a heavy metal custom built smoker gridiron can render.
My grandfather had a dairy farm where he turned one of his barns into his catering business delivering fresh baked breads, cakes, whole milk with the cream, and meats to the community in the Ozarks.
Major part of our business was tourists just passing through on their way to Branson, Missouri or Northwest Arkansas for Razorbacks games. The smoker gridiron pit is named for the WWII P-40 Warhawk that I enjoy flying. This smoker gridiron pit model is the P-40B a medium size pit (B). I will be working up two other sizes, A (smaller) and C (larger) versions of the (B), as shown above.
What is nice about the P-40 Warhawk Smoker Gridiron Pit is the ash pans, that are aluminum pans that hold the coals and wood pellets for smoking or grilling that contains the ash. The ash from the charcoal and wood can then be dumped in gardens or in a yard as a neutralizer. Clean up is a breeze that makes the P-40B Smoker Gridiron pit a low maintenance ideal pit ready for the next pit stop.
