Havoc of Heat & Humidity on Your Golf Game that impacts both the physical Techniques and Mental Mechanics of your golf game; need to stay cool, hydrated, and dry
Golf is a great summertime sport, but staying dry and hydrated is essential. I walk the golf course with my bags in tow during the summer months and use a push/pull cart from June to September. During the other times of the year, I carry my bag, but carrying a 40- lb bag with both temperature and humidity in the 90’s makes for a long day.
Staying hydrated and cool with these conditions and walking approximately 8.5 miles per round is critical at any age, but for those over 50, it is critical because of the ability to handle the heat. I work out 5 times a week in my home gym to help me maintain my health and fitness that also includes handling the hot summer heat and humidity in Missouri, while working on my farm.
Just as critical as staying hydrated and cool is keeping the gloves and grips dry. I was all too vividly reminded of this yesterday, when I failed to swap out my left golf glove after four holes. I went the Bridge too far on a par-5 on the fifth hole. I didn’t realize the sweat being absorbed by my glove. I attempted a layup shot that I made on the par-5 with my 8-Iron that made me play like I had never picked up a golf club in my hands before, based on the results.
Losing Your Grip on Your Golf Game
My layup shot that I made had little loft and hanged it out to the right, with open clubface from the grip slipping in my glove. So my third shot was from the tall grass, off the right rough. The next shot with a new dry glove and grip wiped dry, I hit my target the green. No harm done from having wet glove. I carry five (5) golf gloves and three towels with me during the summer months. One towel is for my clubs, and the other two are for my hands and face. I keep my hands and face towel separate, especially now with CIVID-19 Pandemic. Every hole I swap out my golf gloves with the four extra golf gloves that I carry with me.
A warning sign that you are losing your grip on your golf game for the right-handed golfer. You usually leave your golf shots low and out to the right. The clubface can’t close down at impact, due to the wet glove or hands.
Wet gloves make high handicappers out of all of us, regardless of how long we’ve played. This summer, make sure to carry extra golf gloves and towels with you to play golf, along with ice-cooled water. I make it a habit to take a drink of water after each golf shot and between holes.
Please be aware of the hot weather and thunderstorms with lightning that can be serious and deadly. I use to worked as a lineman and grid engineer for a transmission line company, and lightning is nothing to play a round with, no pun intended, during your golf game.
