Charlie Rymer’s Interview with Reggie Jackson, Mr. October

Two of the best interviews concerning golf swing tips and golf swing fundamentals were conducted by Charlie Rymer. One was with David Duval on the wrist action in the golf swing that Charlie Rymer referred to as That Wrist Thing. That Wrist Thing, that Charlie Rymer referred to, addressed presetting the wrists, a great golf swing fundamental and component in the golf swing sequence.

What I consider the second best interview that Charlie Rymer did was with Mr. October, Reggie Jackson. This second interview was at a PGA Champions Tour Pro-Am at the Diamond Resorts Invitational, on 11Jan2018, on Morning Drive. This second interview was about the golfer’s Red ZONE, the focus factor. The Red ZONE was referenced in my article entitled Golfer’s Sports ZONE- Simple Sports Psychology.

David Duval’s Golf Swing Preset and Reggie Jackson’s Focus Factor

With these two interviews, the average golfer could realize an 80 percent improvement in their golf game. One reason is what Charlie Rymer referred to as That Wrist Thing, or presetting of the wrists, demonstrated by David Duval. This preset maneuver not only completes 80 percent of the golf swing sequence, but the golfer is utilizing a highly developed muscle memory developed from their baseball swing sequence.

Because the baseball swing is learned at a relatively young age, such as preteen, this is considered a highly advanced motor skill that is instinctive and firmly entrenched in the subconscious mind that become an auto-reflex.

During the Reggie Jackson interview, Reggie explained to Charlie Rymer that a key component is focusing, which unlocks all the golfer’s potential, even with a long layoff. Reggie explained how he just focused on the golf ball and a point about 18-inches in front of the ball on the target line.

Focusing on the ball allows the golfer to place their conscious mind into a stronger position in their golf game by stopping the THINKING process! The conscious mind can do one of two things- ONE is FOCUS, the strongest position and option for the golfer to take. SECOND, is to have swing thoughts. THINKING is the very worst thing the golfer can do on the course.

The Reggie Jackson’s golf tip about focusing on the ball is the best means for the average golfer to incorporate Sports Psychology directly into their golf game. The focusing on the ball, Red ZONE, was a concept highlighted in the movie Caddyshack, in the Be the Ball quote.

Be the ball quote- (Ty Webb- played by Chevy Chase mentioned to Danny Noonan- played by Michael O’Keefe) I’m going to give you a little advice. There’s a force in the universe that makes things happen. And all you have to do is get in touch with it, stop thinking, let things happen, and be the ball.

That Wrist Thing and Be the Ball– Two Components of the Golfer’s Sports Psychology

That Wrist Thing and Be the Ball are two of the major components that the golfer can utilize to incorporate Sports Psychology, without a lot of effort. That Wrist Thing, that was referred to by Charlie Rymer, is a technique used in the baseball.

Using a baseball technique in the golf swing is what Sports Psychologists refer to as Apperception. That Wrist Thing also provides the golfer with a sequence and muscle memory component. These are three of the five elements in The ASPEN Self-Coaching Technique, allowing the golfer’s subconscious mind to execute the golf swing. The golfer can practice with their conscious mind, but the golfer won’t play long effectively with their conscious mind. Performing on the golf course is a subconscious function. This is the reason why many of the golfer’s lessons and practice sessions don’t make it to the golf course intacted.

Another component of Sports Psychology is Sports Mental Imagery, or what I refer to as Mentalization. A great mentalization that the golfer could use in their focus technique is to Be the Ball. A common symbol we use every day is a great mentalization. This is the Initiate/Off toggle switch on most appliances, especially computers, shown below. This is what I want my conscious mind to picture and focus on while looking at the ball. The circle in the impact ZONE, and the line is my target LINE. This really works for focusing the golfer’s attention.

The common Initiate/Off toggle switch provides the golfer with a great mental image to develop their RED ZONE.

Charlie Rymer’s Debut on the PGA Champions Tour

Charlie Rymer turned 50 on December 18, 2017. This made Charlie eligible to play on the PGA Champions Tour. Charlie Rymer will exercise his option on 12Jan2018 and make his debut appearance at the Diamond Resorts Invitational tournament. Congratulations to Charlie Rymer!

Between Charlie Rymer and John Daly, the Champions Tour should be quite a Broadway experience made for golf fans.

A Recommendation for your Golf Game:

I would like to recommend an interesting radio program that I regularly listen to from my home state Arkansas on my I-Heart Radio app on KARN 102.9 FM station, out of Little Rock, AR. They air a golf show called Arkansas Fairways and Greens, at 7:00 AM CT each Saturday morning, hosted by Bob Steel, and co-hosted by Jay Fox and Charles Crowson. Bob occasionally as has his guess Alex Myers with Golf Digest and Ron Sirak with Golf Channel. I was interviewed on his show about my book, The ESPY Golf Swing Coach. This show is worth tuning into for golf news and information.

Jay Fox is an Administrator with Arkansas State Golf Association that discuss amateur golf and rules of the game.
